The Ishares Canadian S&P/TSX Gold Index ETF which tracks the Toronto market's gold sector, hit a new 52-week high on Tuesday as the units traded up $3.94 or about five per cent at $88.73 on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
Gold has followed the price for oil and other commodities higher over recent years, boosted by the falling U.S. dollar.
An ounce of gold for February delivery climbed as high as $879.40 an ounce on the New York Mercantile Exchange breaking a 1980 record of US$875 as traders bet that rebounding oil prices would boost demand for the metal as a safe haven investment.
Prices later retreated to $877.20, up $15.20 in morning trading.
Individual gold stocks trading higher included Barrick Gold Corp. (TSX:ABX), up $2.37 or five per cent at $49.85, while Goldcorp Inc. (TSX:G) shares gained 85 cents at $38.17.
Kinross Gold Corp. (TSX:K) stock was up $1.49 or about seven per cent at $21.90.
