MICROSOFT - Kurzfristige Longchance

MICROSOFT (Nachrichten/Aktienkurs) (MSFT / ISIN: US5949181045) : 23,17 $  (+0,08%)

Aktueller Tageschart(log) seit November 2005 (1 Kerze = 1 Tag)

Ballmer Defends Microsoft Spending Plan
By Bill Snyder
TheStreet.com Senior Writer
5/31/2006 11:43 AM EDT

Investors who expected Microsoft (MSFT:Nasdaq) CEO Steve Ballmer to announce a special dividend or additional share buybacks on Wednesday were disappointed. Instead, the combative software executive used a rare appearance at an investment conference to deliver a vigorous defense of his plans to up spending by some $2.6 billion in fiscal 2007.

There are "incredible" opportunities to innovate in the next 10 years, Ballmer said during a talk at a conference sponsored by Sanford W. Bernstein. "If you believe in the opportunity you have to invest behind it. You have to make big, bold bets," he said.

The company needs to invest in new markets and products, as well as existing ones, he said. "There's a lot of innovation still coming in Internet browsing and hardware. If we don't keep Windows fresh, Windows will not continue to flourish."

Ballmer said that to remain a major software player, Microsoft must become a major "software-as-a-service company" as well. And that takes investment, he added.

Plans to increase spending were announced during Microsoft's April earnings call, and investors reacted by promptly delivering the stock's biggest single-day loss in years. There have been calls to increase shareholder value via a larger dividend or increased buybacks.

Ballmer noted that Microsoft has returned $87 billion in cash to shareholders since June 30, 2001.

In recent trading, shares of the software giant were up 2 cents to $23.17.

Google Deal Might Help Dell Talks With Microsoft
By Antone Gonsalves, TechWeb News

Dell Inc.'s agreement to ship 10s of millions of computers with Google Inc.'s desktop search software could give the computer maker leverage in price negotiations over Vista with Microsoft Corp., a research firm said Friday.

In addition, Gartner Inc. said in its latest news analysis that it expects at least three more of the top PC vendors to strike similar deals with Google. Dell and the online search engine giant announced May 25 that Dell computers would ship with Google software, and that the default homepage on Microsoft Internet Explorer Web browser, which ships with Windows, would be a joint Web site of the two companies.

Dell is Microsoft's biggest customer for its Windows operating system, and the software maker has already signaled intentions to raise the average prices for Windows when Vista launches in January, according to Gartner. Dell, however, has struggled to meet financial expectations in the last two fiscal quarters and is expected to try to minimize any Windows price increase.

In between these opposing desires by the long-time partners is Microsoft's intent to try to mitigate the impact of Google software shipping with new PCs. "Dell showing that they'll work with other folks in areas that Microsoft competes may get them more attention from Microsoft," Gartner analyst Michael Silver said. Any commercial offer from Microsoft, however, would have to be enough to counter the per-PC payments from Google, Gartner said in its news analysis.

"Whether such a response involves direct payments or a reduction in prices for Windows, Microsoft's obligation to offer equal terms to original equipment manufacturer (OEM) buyers means the result would be a reduction in overall revenue and margins," the analyst firm said.

The Dell/Google deal is the latest twist of a long-time practice in which software makers pay computer manufacturers to get their icons on a desktop, Silver said. "This is really just an evolution of what hardware vendors have been doing for years," Silver said.

Viel Erfolg.

Why Cash, Microsoft Became My Kings
By Cody Willard
5/12/2006 9:27 AM EDT

The captain's in the chartroom, navigating on a star
Can't know where we're going 'cause he don't know where we are
Don't you think I don't know how to tell the time
Can't you see you can't sell me something that is mine.

-- Joe Walsh

It's not any prettier for the bulls this morning than it was last night. In fact, with the futures gapped lower, it's still a bull market in ugliness.

I'd been vocally cautious and raised tons of cash earlier this week, in large part because I decided that the commodity stocks and the parabolic moves that every single one of them that I can think of made in the last few weeks is a giant indicator of speculation run amok. Although I was obviously concerned about the potential for a major selloff across the board, I certainly had no idea that the market was about to tank like this or I would have gone ahead and gone full on to the short side.

We can and will go back and analyze what has happened this week, but this morning, the only thing that really matters is what an investor should do now. I wish I could tell you that I'm putting the cash back to work and that I'm back to being an unfettered bull. But I'm not.

I really don't like what's gone on in the commodity sector lately. I am going to officially start calling the nonprecious metals and their stocks a bubble. The many vocal, emotional and greedy bulls in the sector are no long relying on a healthy fundamental upcycle. That upcycle is about a half-decade old already and most of these stocks are up similar percentages to what the telecom and dot-com stocks were from 1996 to 2000.

If you don't think there's a bunch of Webvans (time to add to that one yet?!) and Nortels (NT:NYSE) in that batch of spiked commodity stocks, you need to get into cash and out of this market -- because there will be many commodity stocks that are going to be down substantially from their current levels, no matter what happens to this global economy and stock market over the next five years.

What are the commodity bulls who are sticking with their longs and/or buying more thinking? They typically think that, as Jim Rogers wrote in his excellent books, commodity cycles last longer than a decade and as long as 20 years or so. Of course, no commodity cycle has ever taken place in a completely networked developed world. You ever heard of Internet time and how it contracts the length of all cycles? There's no way this commodity cycle lasts 20 years with the entire developed world -- billions of people -- already cognizant of the cycle and changing their behavior as consumers and investors as the cycle develops.

The commodity bulls might also be using the old "greater fool" theory of investing.

Who are these guys who readily admit to a double-digit risk premium in the price of oil, but think that oil's a great investment? I guess they're hoping the multiple of that risk premium will keep running. We'll see, but I certainly believe that we'll look back at $75 oil ($50 oil -- whatever!) and wonder who these jokers were who told us that Internet traffic would more than fill up every fiber optic network built and that the supply of communications traffic would never meet demand. I mean, we'll wonder who these jokers were who are currently telling us that the supply of oil and gasoline will never meet demand.

All this takes me back to why I substantially sold down all my positions earlier this week.

Look, cycles aren't smooth. Overinvestment happens. Greed and fear are realities of human nature, and I believe there's a lot of greed out there in the commodities market. And although I'd been expecting a major rotation into tech (and I still believe that might happen), I decided that such a rotation can't possibly be expected to be smooth given the commodity bubble that's finally become overinflated in the past few months.

At some point soon, I expect to take a small amount of speculative capital and buy long-dated puts in the weakest and worst commodity stocks. But as always, I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

In the meantime, though, cash (and Microsoft) remain my kings.

MSFT-Chart seit Jahresanfang: Nachdem Mr. Softee Ende April bekannt gegeben hatte, weitere 2 Mrd.

Dell to Supply Google With Servers

Dell Reaches Deal to Supply Google With Customized Computer Servers

ROUND ROCK, Texas (AP) -- Dell Inc. said Tuesday it had reached a deal to supply Google Inc. with customized computer servers the search engine company will sell to corporate customers.

Dell spokesman Jess Blackburn said the products are based on the company's server platform but will feature Google-branded logos. The systems will be sold to Google's corporate clients as the Google Search Appliance.

"These would in effect be Google products," Blackburn said. "Nothing about the server would make you think it's a Dell platform."

Financial terms and other details were not provided by Dell or Google.

The deal marks the second time in as many months the two tech giants have partnered.

In May, Mountain View, Calif.-based Google said it would start bundling some of its software on Dell's personal computers.

The server news came a day after Google said it will introduce an online spreadsheet program, a free alternative to the dominant Excel software sold by Microsoft Corp.

Google invades old Microsoft turf: Spreadsheets
By John Markoff
The New York Times

Published: June 6, 2006

SAN FRANCISCO. Stepping up its attack on Microsoft's core business, Google made available Tuesday a test version of a free, Web-based spreadsheet program that is intended to make it simple to edit and share data online.

Google has said that the program, Google Spreadsheets, will be able to read and create files in the format used by Excel, the Microsoft spreadsheet software that is installed on millions of personal computers.

The spreadsheet service is another step in Google's steady march toward creating its own computing universe that is an alternative to the desktop PC software business now dominated by Microsoft. It comes months after Google bought Upstart, a small Silicon Valley company that created a Web-based word-processing program, Writely.

As Google has moved into Microsoft's traditional desktop turf, Microsoft has been fighting back by adding online components to its software and bolstering its Web offerings. It is working especially hard to challenge Google's dominance in Web search services and the lucrative advertising they generate.

Google executives said Monday that the spreadsheet program would make it possible for as many as 10 people to edit a spreadsheet document simultaneously online...

[= babylonische Sprachverwirrung? - A.L.]

...and to chat about it, using Google's instant messaging program.

The new service will be able to handle several hundred formulas used to manipulate data in Excel, but not more complex functions like macros, said the Google Spreadsheets product manager, Jonathan Rochelle.

"When people want to share and collaborate, we think this product fits in well," Rochelle said.

The service, available on a limited basis at http://spreadsheet.google.com, was developed by Google's research arm, Google Labs.

The company emphasized the experimental nature of the product and said that the service would initially be offered to only a limited number of users. The spreadsheet service is intended to appeal to small groups of business users, or to people who now use spreadsheets as database programs to keep simple lists, Rochelle said. For example, soccer coaches juggling team lists and people planning family reunions might use it to put data in a place where it can be easily viewed and edited by others.

Rochelle said the ability for many people to collaborate was quite different from the standard method of e-mailing files back and forth. "It's a 'wow' moment with most users," he said.

For now, Google Spreadsheets lacks the ability to chart information. But Google is hoping that the service and Writely will give it a head start on Microsoft in the area of so-called Web services.

Google has played down its efforts in this field. Despite widespread talk that Writely could compete with Microsoft Word, Google's chief executive, Eric Schmidt, said at a recent news conference that the company had no intention of using Writely to enter the word-processing marketplace. Rather, he said, Google was hoping to integrate Web- based word processing into many services that it was developing.

Last year, Microsoft responded to the growing availability of online alternatives to traditional desktop programs by announcing Windows Live and Office Live, two Microsoft-oriented Web portals. Microsoft says the Office Live service permits several users to edit an Excel spreadsheet document simultaneously. But those users need Excel software on their personal computers. Google is hoping that many Web users will find it simpler to share the information by placing it on Google's servers.

Alan Yates, general manager for information worker business strategy at Microsoft, said the ability to collaborate had been available to Microsoft Office users for some time.

"We see most consumers are really looking for more integration with their school or work life," he said. "They want more compatibility and not less."

Google executives deflected questions about how it would derive revenue from its new service.

Rochelle said that for now the company had no plans to connect the service to its AdWords advertising system, which places relevant text advertisements on Web pages.

Google sued over book plans

A French publishing company said Tuesday it was suing the Google for piracy over its effort to digitize millions of books for online viewing, AFX News reported from Paris.

La Martinière, which owns the publishers Le Seuil in France, Delachaux & Niestlé in Switzerland and Harry N. Abrams in the United States, accuses Google of "counterfeiting and breach of intellectual property rights." The lawsuit, to be filed in a Paris court, is aimed at both Google France and its parent company.
