digg Share Nevada was given the nickname “The Silver State” around the time it was admitted into the union in 1864. At the time, silver was the primary mineral mined in the state; in fact, up until 1999, Nevada produced about 30 percent of all the silver in the United States. In the early 1980’s, “The Silver State” moniker was even emblazoned across the state’s license plates. Nowadays, if Nevada were to be given a new nickname, it should be “The Gold State.”
Nevada is home to the Carlin Trend, North America’s most prolific gold-producing area and the second-largest known gold resources in the world after the Witwatersrand in South Africa. There are numerous sources that estimate the amount of gold contained in the resource, and depending on who you chose to believe, the trend may contain up to 180 million ounces of gold.
The Carlin Gold trend is a belt of gold deposits, primarily in Paleozoic limy sediments, that are about 50 miles wide and 40 miles long. Carlin-style deposits are found around the world. The Carlin Trend in northeastern Nevada was formed when a tectonic crustal block collided with the North American Plate. The pressure and temperature associated with the collision produced hot springs along the suture zone (area of contact between the two plates). Hot springs formed along the suture zone bringing dissolved minerals towards the surface. These minerals, primarily silver and gold in the case of the Carlin Trend, precipitated along the fissures and faults in the rock. Several episodes of subsurface magmatism occurred subsequent to the collision, adding to the amount of mineral deposition.
Carlin-type deposits have what geologists call “disseminated gold,” which is just a fancy way of saying “spread throughout.” This type of gold deposit is very low grade. It generally takes a microscope to see the gold in these types of deposits, which explains why it was overlooked by the early prospectors. The grade may be low in these deposits, but what they lack in grade they make up for in volume. After the value of these deposits came to the forefront, geologists around the world starting hunting down Carlin- type deposits.
To extract gold from such low-grade deposits miners crush tonnes and tonnes of rock, which is piled into heaps and irrigated with cyanide. The cyanide percolates through the heap, extracting the gold. In the early days of the invisible-gold rush, a tonne of ore might contain a few tenths of an ounce of gold. Today that minuscule amount would be considered high grade. Cyanide heap leaching- is a technique that was pioneered at the Nevada Carlin trend.
By 2008, mines in the Carlin Trend had produced over 70 million ounces of gold, worth around US$85 billion at 2010 prices. Open-pit mining was the original technique employed at the Carlin trend, and it is still in use today. In 1994, mining companies began moving underground to exploit the higher-grade ore down-dip from existing open pits. These deeper deposits have been discovered at Rossi, Dee, Meikle, Gold Bug, Rodeo, Deep Post, Deep Star, Turf, Four Corners, West Leeville, Hardie Footwall, Deep Carlin, Mike, Rain, Tess and Rain Extension.
The largest and highest-grade discoveries along the Carlin Trend are associated with major faults. These are very old faults, as are the Cortez faults. The faults in this area are key to finding gold; as mentioned earlier, the gold precipitated in fissures and faults. Geologists are taking the knowledge they acquired at the Carlin Trend, and applying it to other areas of Nevada, and the world. The exact ages, and relationships between the faults in the area is not completely understood- as there is considerable agreement regarding the finite details, among geologists. Despite this, what is and has been discovered at the Carlin Trend is being applied throughout Nevada, and the world.
Currently, there are approximately 30 miners operating in the region. It can be hard to keep up with all the players in the region because acquisitions are common as many of the big boys understand the value one of these juniors may hold, and they are quickly scooped up. Examples of some miners active in the region: Allied Nevada Gold (TSE:ANV; AMEX:ANV), Newmont (NYSE:NEM), and Barrick Gold (NYSE:ABX; TSE:ABX).
The Carlin trend taught the world that “low grade deposits are still quite mineable.” Exploration is ongoing in Nevada with the Cortez Trend now being rumored to hold the same amount of gold as the Carlin. This is good news, as the world needs as many explorers out there as possible because to satisfy our hunger for gold, every year we need to find the equivalence of a Carlin Trend.

Rattlesnake Hills greenstone belt
The Rattlesnake Hills greenstone belt represents a fragment of a partially exposed synformal Archean greenstone belt within the Wyoming craton that was intruded by Tertiary alkalic volcanics. The supracrustal belt has been subjected to multiphase deformation during the Archean and later brittle deformation during the Laramide orogeny. Ductile deformation during the Archean produced foliation, and at least three episodes of folding.
[edit] Folding
The exposed core of the Rattlesnake Hills forms an Archean supracrustal belt of metasedimentary and metavolcanic rock that has been intruded by more than 40 Tertiary alkalic plugs and dikes. Mapping by Hausel[1] indicated that the supracrustal belt consisted of a refolded, isoclinally folded, greenstone belt fragment with a lower(?) metasedimentary unit of metapelite, quartzite, banded iron formation and amphibolite named the Barlow Springs Formation. The Barlow Springs Formation is overlain by pillowed metatholeiites of the McDougal Gulch Metavolcanics, which, in turn, is overlain by metagreywacke with intercalated metacherts of the UT Creek Formation. The northern limb of the Rattlesnake synform was not uplifted and presumably underlies the Phanerozoic sediments north of the uplift.
[edit] Mineralization
At least three episodes of gold mineralization are recognized in the district. These include syngenetic stratabound exhalitive mineralization, epigenetic mineralization, and disseminated epithermal gold associated with the volcanic activity.
The presence of anomalous gold associated with the Tertiary alkalic volcanism suggests this region to represent a favorable exploration target for low-grade, large-tonnage, gold mineralization. The greenstone belt was considered to have high potential for gold mineralization by Hausel who investigated the greenstone belt initially in 1982 and made several significant discoveries. Since 1996, several companies, the most notable at present being EVG (Evolving Gold Corp), have explored the belt finding additional gold anomalies including at least one deposit with > 1 million ounces of gold.[1]

September is historically an even better month for gold stocks as measured by the NYSE Arca Gold Miners Index (GDM).
After the typically weak months of June and July, the gold miners start moving up in August and make an 8.3 percent leap in September. In September 2009, the jump was 14.5 percent. Since 1993, the GDM has been up 12 times in September and down just five times.
Given the current economic weakness, CIBC pointed out that during the Great Recession, "gold was one of the only investment classes that provided positive returns. This fact will not be forgotten if the next recession materializes."
Its analysts also say that gold equities look relatively cheap compared to bullion, adding that, for the first time ever, some of the big producers are trading at price-earnings ratios below the S&P 500 Index average.

You are right. It's quiet, but something is happening. I think we have now reached a bottom and getting ready to break to the upside.
Technically, over the last 6 weeks, the sp has moved within a triangular wedge with rising bottoms. This is bullish. The gap left is only 3 cents, .76 to .79.
With or without a pr, something should happen next week...

Goldcorp is buying 19 million Evolving shares at 82¢ apiece in a private placement - a significant stake in a company that currently has 107.2 million shares outstanding and a market cap of $85.8 million.
Evolving president and chief geologist, Quinton Hennigh, who used to work for Newmont, says Goldcorp had no prior interest in Evolving until now.
"I can't speak on behalf of Goldcorp but I would say there was a lot of intrigue with the fact that we have a large land position in the Carlin trend," Hennigh says.
Evolving will use the funds to explore its Rattlesnake Hills project in Wyoming and its Carlin and Humboldt projects in Nevada. Rattlesnake Hills is a former Newmont project and Evolving has a lease and sublease agreement with Newmont for the Carlin property. Humboldt was acquired from private landholders and has no connection to Newmont.
Evolving shares were trading around 80¢ at mid-day today, down 6¢, on a trading volume of 652,000 shares.
Once the money comes in from Goldcorp, Evolving will have $27 million in the bank giving the company enough cash to stretch well beyond this year's $8-million-or-so budget.
"We plan to do the hard work and use this money effectively and make what could be a very huge discovery," Hennigh says.
Located around and adjacent to the Carlin property, the 93-sq.-km Humboldt land was acquired by Evolving in early May bringing the total Carlin-area land holdings to 137 sq. km.
Evolving has the option to earn a 100% interest in Humboldt by spending US$9.7 million over four years - a much better deal for Evolving than the Carlin property, which includes significant claw back provisions for Newmont.
"It positions us better in terms of any exploration done. We stand to gain much more now," Hennigh says. "We know there is gold mineralization in this area and we feel pretty good of our odds of finding a discovery on the property."
Evolving is currently drilling in both Nevada and Wyoming. The company has budgeted about $4 million for Nevada with five or six holes planned for Humboldt and two or three holes for the Carlin property, each between 700 metres and 1,200 metres deep.
Evolving is drilling now at Humboldt. The company has outlined 16 targets based on a geophysical survey.
Up in Wyoming, Evolving has already started a 20,000-metre drill program at Rattlesnake Hills where about 60% of the drill budget will focus on infill and step-out drilling around the North Stock and Antelope Basin zones.
For the rest of the drilling, Evolving plans to test some new targets that were identified by surface sampling and mapping in 2009.
All the targets are located within a 2 km radius of North Stock and Antelope Basin.
The company drilled 78 holes there last year amounting to nearly 30,000 metres, and 15 holes (6,500 metres) in 2008.
Evolving is expecting a National Instrument 43-101 technical report update on Rattlesnake Hills to come out very soon.
Much of the company's exploration strategy comes from the AMEC technical report that hasn't been released yet.
Hennigh says both AMEC and Evolving have been too busy recently to put the finishing touches on the report.
When junior mining companies make a big gold discovery, shareholders often see double- and triple-digit investment gains.
Of course, gold is very rare and making a significant discovery isn't easy.
But ask any geologist...
The best place to find large deposits of gold is close to where other major deposits have already been discovered.
That's why I've recently been looking to invest in a region that many consider one of the best places in the world for gold exploration.
Just 300 miles north of Las Vegas
Nevada is one of the largest sources of gold in the world. By itself, the state contributes over 7% of total world gold production, making it the fourth largest producer in the world behind, China, South Africa, and Australia.
The majority of Nevada's vast gold resources is contained in the second largest economic gold anomaly in the world — second only to South Africa — called the Carlin Trend.
Evolving Gold drills 1.16 g/t Au over 128.1 m
Evolving Gold Corp (C:EVG) Shares Issued 127,189,802Last Close 8/20/2010 $0.78Monday August 23 2010 - News Release
Mr. Robert Barker reports:
EVOLVING GOLD REPORTS FIRST 2010 ASSAY RESULTS FROM RATTLESNAKE HILLS; 128.1 METERS AT 1.16 GPT AU IN HOLE RSC-099; INCLUDES 42.6 METERS AT 2.40 GPT AU
Evolving Gold Corp. (TSX VENTURE: EVG)(FRANKFURT: EV7) (the "Company") announces assays for the first fourteen core holes from its 2010 drilling program at its Rattlesnake Hills project in central Wyoming. Results include 128.1 meters at 1.16 gpt Au (420 ft at 0.034 opt Au), including 42.6 meters at 2.40 gpt Au (140 ft at 0.07 opt Au) in drill hole RSC-099, and 73.2 meters at 1.39 gpt Au (240 ft at 0.041 opt Au) in drill hole RSC-100. These two drill holes are step out drill holes to the south and west of the Antelope Basin gold zone.
Preliminary examinations of core from drilling on the porphyry target southeast of North Stock and on a new exploration target southwest of Antelope Basin show strong alteration and sulfide mineralization in both targets. Assays are still pending in both cases.
-- Hole RSC-099 intersected 128.1 meters at 1.16 gpt Au (420 ft at 0.034 opt Au), including 42.6 meters at 2.40 gpt Au (140 ft at 0.070 opt Au) approximately 30 meters beyond any previous drilling along the southern margin of the Antelope Basin zone. This confirms an extension of gold mineralization indicated in a review of 2009 results. The mineralization is largely oxidized or partially oxidized, and mineralization remains open. -- Hole RSC-100 intersected 73.2 meters at 1.39 gpt Au (240 ft at 0.041 opt Au) west of the Antelope Basin zone in an area that also was identified as open in a review of 2009 results. The mineralization remains open.
-- Hole RSC-096 intersected 85.3 meters at 0.41 gpt Au (280 ft at 0.012 opt Au) between North Stock and Antelope Basin. Though the grade is relatively low, this intersection indicates potential for defining a new gold zone between the North Stock and Antelope Basin zones that could start to fill the gap between the two zones and improve geometry for open pit development.
"The initial results from this year's drilling continue to expand the known zones of mineralization at Rattlesnake Hills," comments Quinton Hennigh, President and Chief Geologist. "An examination of results from drilling in 2009 indicated that the known zones of gold mineralization all remained open to expansion along strike and to depth. These initial assay results demonstrate the continuity and potential for expansion of the Antelope Basin zone to the south, east and west. Though drill hole RSC-096, between North Stock and Antelope Basin intersected relatively low grade gold, the very long interval of gold mineralization in that drill hole is significant as an indication of a potential new gold zone between North Stock and Antelope Basin." To date approximately 9,000 meters (29,500 feet) of drilling in a planned 20,000 meter diamond drill program have been completed with three drill rigs. The Company plans to add a fourth drill rig to the program during the month of August.

Drill hole RSC-095, drilling in the West target, west of North Stock intersected anomalous gold, 0.1 gpt Au, over 248 meters starting at 21 meters depth.
All drill hole averages are weighted averages, weighting each assay interval according to the core length for that assay interval. All assay intervals are included in the average, with no bottom cut-off. True widths of mineralization in these drill holes, at this stage of exploration, are not precisely known. Gold assays were completed by SGS Canada Inc. in Toronto, using a 30 gram charge, fire assay, with an ICP finish.
Exploration Target Update
Two deeper drill holes, RSC-111 and RSC-113 have been completed to depths of approximately 1,000 meters in an area southeast of the North Stock gold zone, where porphyry style mineralization was previously encountered in 2009 drill hole RSC-027. Both deep holes intersected multiple zones of porphyritic intrusions, containing stockwork and disseminated sulfide mineralization within zones of intense alteration. Altered monzodiorite intrusions with strong sulfide mineralization, similar to mineralization at Antelope Basin, was also intersected in RSC-111. Drill hole RSC-117, the first hole in an exploration target approximately 400 meters southwest of Antelope Basin, intersected several zones of alteration and strong sulfide mineralization in a monzodiorite intrusion, similar in character to mineralization defined at Antelope Basin. Assays are still pending on these three drill holes.
Comments Quinton Hennigh, "Most of the early results reported here from our 2010 drilling are from drill holes that test extensions of lower grade halo gold mineralization. The initial visual results on two of our important new exploration targets are encouraging, but we are still awaiting assay results. The strong alteration patterns and strong zones of sulfide mineralization demonstrate that we are still a long way from defining the full size potential of this gold system. We continue to define new targets with surface sampling and mapping, with our geophysical surveys, and by reinterpretation of our drill results. With our permitting fully in place, and with the expected arrival of a fourth drill rig shortly, we are in a good position to test the full potential of our high priority exploration targets this summer."
NI 43-101 Report for the Rattlesnake Hills Project
AMEC E&C Services Ltd. (AMEC) has completed the NI 43-101 report to update the exploration status of the Rattlesnake Hills project. The report has been filed on SEDAR, where it will be available for review. The report states, "Potential to better define the mineralization exists within the deposit area and requires additional infill drilling," and "... exploration targets have the potential to substantially enlarge the known Rattlesnake deposit area."
The report does not include a resource estimate, and the report states in this regard, "Although the styles and details of the Rattlesnake mineralization are relatively well known at this time... more drilling is required to adequately define geological controls on mineralization." Because of the exploration status of the property, and the potential for additional discoveries, the report concludes that at this stage of exploration of the project, "... it is considered premature to undertake mineral resource estimation."
