EuroChem Shares Uralkali's Optimism for the Future of Potash
By looking at the headlines over the past few months, one could easily get the idea that Uralkali is the only potash producer of note in the world today. While their exit from the FSU joint venture rocked the potash world and put the fourth leg under tabled greenfield projects, EuroChem, who also resides at the foot of Russia's Ural Mountains is moving forward with two potash plants which will go operational sometime in 2017.
While EuroChem is not as large as Uralkali, low production margins and expected demand from Indo-China are expected buttress the operation. The potash price for sendouts to China slipped this year from $400/MT to today's $325. But EuroChem claims that, even with construction costs, they can still deliver product in the black at $300/ton, telling Bloomberg news their price could fall as far as $250/ton.
EuroChem will begin production ASAP at their two projects, starting-up in 2017, but says it will wait until 2019 before tendering product. By that time, the market could look a lot different than it does today and corn prices in the U.S. may have swung back to the high side. That would inject strength into the U.S. market, and would impact global prices, to a degree.
But the largest buyers -- like India and China -- are often the ones to dictate prices and that may put corn prices at odds with global demand. EuroChem is currently negotiating for $750 million in financing to complete its Usolskiy mine by the first of 2014. But if EuroChem waits until 2019 to tender product, they will have plenty of time to build inventories and garner marketshare.
As Vale SA tables projects, K+S is downgraded and PotashCorp labels Uralkali's stunt, "the dumbest thing they have ever seen", EuroChem bucks the trend and looks ahead with optimism. With wide production margins and a pocket full of cash, EuroChem may be able to stay afloat as they prepare fresh supplies in a down market.

November 12, 2013 (Source: BelTA) – Belarusian Potash Company exported from 400,000 to 450,000 tonnes of potash fertilizers in October, thus meeting its goal. The final figure is being specified now, BPC representatives told BelTA.
“We planned to sell 420,000 tonnes in October. The plan has been fulfilled,” BelTA has been told. The main markets were Southeastern Asia countries: Thailand, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Sri Lanka (30,000-35,000 tonnes per country), Brazil (about 110,000 tonnes), Norway (roughly 40,000 tonnes), and Belgium (about 20,000 tonnes).
Apart from that, in October container deliveries to Southeastern Asia were extremely in demand. In the future BPC intends to expand the mechanism for deliveries to other regions.

November 12, 2013 (Source: Reuters) – Engineering firm Shaft Sinkers has dismissed as “nonsensical” an $800 million claim brought by Russia’s third-largest fertiliser firm over the flooding of a mineshaft that delayed a $4 billion potash project.
The claim by Eurochem pits its owner – tycoon Andrei Melnichenko – against a trio of oligarchs from ex-Soviet states who indirectly control Shaft Sinkers.
Eurochem filed for arbitration in October 2012 in France and Switzerland after terminating the contract in late 2011. It says Shaft Sinkers concealed evidence that the chemical sealants used would fail to keep groundwater out of the mine.
Shaft Sinkers, which is based in South Africa and listed in London, counters that Eurochem is motivated by a desire to avoid losses after the collapse of a Russo-Belarussian sales cartel in July hammered global prices for the soil nutrient.
“I could agree with many commentators who suggest (that) given the collapse in the price of potash it is better to stop the work, keep the potash in the ground and sue somebody,” Chris Hall, chief financial officer of Shaft Sinkers, told Reuters.

November 12, 2013 (Source: Business News Americas) — Brazil will continue to be one of the world"s largest importers of fertilizers despite multibillion dollar investments in new fertilizer production capacity, according to a study from an industrial association.
Brazil is one of the world"s leading exporters of agricultural products but currently imports around 70% of its fertilizer requirements.
According to report published by Fiesp, the industrial association of the state of São Paulo, investments in new nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (or NPK) fertilizer plants will reduce this proportion to 59% in 2018.
However, a continued increase in agricultural demand will then lead to Brazil"s import dependency in NPK fertilizers edging back to 63% by 2023.

Belarus to cut the price of 2014 potash exports
Posted Nov. 14th, 2013
MINSK (Reuters) — Belarus plans to cut the price of potash exports to $300 a tonne in 2014, the economy ministry said, adding to pressure on global prices for the soil nutrient already hit by the breakup of its joint venture with Russia.
Belarus’ sales alliance with Russian producer Uralkali fell apart in July, causing an economic headache for Belarus, where potash exports are a key foreign currency earner. The joint venture accounted for 40 percent of the world market.
“We forecast 2014 potash exports of seven million tonnes… We cut the price to $300 per tonne,” deputy economy minister Alexander Yaroshenko told a meeting in parliament on Thursday. The shipments will be priced at a significant discount to the $379 per tonne average that Belarus recorded for exports in the first eight months of 2013. Attempts by Belaruskali and other producers to sell additional volumes following the breakup could put further pressure on prices, Uralkali has said. Uralkali also expected global potash prices to stay above $300 per tonne.
No hindrances for extraditing Vladislav Baumgertner to Russia
14.11.2013 18:50
MINSK, 14 November (BelTA) – There are no hindrances that prevent the extradition of Vladislav Baumgertner to Russia, BelTA learned from Prosecutor General of Belarus Alexander Konyuk on 14 November.
“As the Prosecutor General I don’t see hindrances that prevent the extradition of Vladislav Baumgertner to Russia. Everything will be done within the framework of the Criminal Procedure Code,” the official told media.
In early November the Office of the Prosecutor General of Belarus received the request of the Prosecutor General’s Office of Russia for extradition of Vladislav Baumgertner. “The documents are being examined and processed. In line with the law we will give an answer,” said the Prosecutor General.
Alexander Konyuk stressed that in Russia Vladislav Baumgertner faces charges similar to those pressed by the Belarusian side.
Vladislav Baumgertner was arrested by Belarusian law enforcement agencies on 26 August. He faced charges specified by part 3, article 424 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus: abusive exercise of power and abuse of office. Later on pre-trial restrictions for Vladislav Baumgertner were replaced with home detention. The Russian side has brought charges against Vladislav Baumgertner in absentia. The charges are stipulated by part 3, article 33 and part 2, article 201 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (abuse of authority with grave consequences).
