Energy experts, legislators and business leaders outlined the importance of keeping energy efficiency at the forefront of national research and policy making to make communities and the world more secure, resilient and sustainable.

Representatives discuss new bipartisan energy efficiency efforts

U.S. Rep. Cory Gardner (R-Colo.) and U.S. Rep. Peter Welch (D-Vt.), who sit on the Energy and Commerce Committee, discussed forthcoming bipartisan energy efficiency efforts at the forum. The new bipartisan efforts will focus on encouraging more energy efficiency in government and businesses to save money, create local jobs and sustain energy resources.

Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee Chair delivers afternoon keynote

Keynote speaker Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) addressed the more than 300 forum attendees.

"Energy efficiency is a good investment – it saves households and business owners money, creates jobs and moves our country toward a more competitive, low-carbon economy," Wyden said. "But passing an energy efficiency bill through Congress will take more than common sense and bipartisan support. It's going to take the businesses, efficiency advocates, consumers and government officials who are backing this issue to send a message that now is the time to bring an efficiency bill to a vote."

Pulitzer Prize winning author focuses on energy efficiency

Daniel Yergin provided insight on his recent book, The Quest: Energy, Security, and the Remaking of the Modern World. Yergin is one of America's most influential energy experts, vice chairman of IHS Cambridge Energy Research Associates and a Pulitzer Prize winning author.

"Energy efficiency is one of our nation's greatest energy resources.  It is also embedded throughout our economy.  Capturing it requires technology, mindset, commitment, and plain old street smarts. But the payback can be huge," said Yergin. "The reason I focused on energy efficiency at the conclusion of The Quest is because of its strategic importance to our country's energy future."

New energy efficiency research released by Johnson Controls President

Dave Myers, president, Johnson Controls, Building Efficiency, shared highlights of the seventh annual Energy Efficiency Indicator Survey, which gauges the perceptions of more than 3,000 building owners and operators around the world on issues related to energy management practices, energy efficiency and renewable energy investment plans, clean technology integration and project financing approaches.

This year's survey indicated public goals and private financing continue to push global momentum for energy efficiency.  In fact, energy efficiency interest increased 116 percent globally since 2010, with those who set goals making the greatest strides in reducing energy use.

"We need public officials and private investors to work together to reduce the market's uncertainty and capture momentum toward a more energy efficient global economy," said Myers.

The Energy Efficiency Indicator survey is led by Johnson Controls' Institute for Building Efficiency in partnership with the International Facility Management Association and the Urban Land Institute.

Public Officials Recognized with Energy Leadership Awards

Three public officials received Energy Leadership Awards for their efforts in instituting and advancing energy efficiency in North America. The awards and their recipients are:

Governor's Award — Jack Markell, governor of Delaware. Markell has established statewide energy efficiency standards to retrofit homes and businesses and to encourage combined heat, power and cogeneration projects in the industrial sector. He has promoted vehicle efficiency through an electric vehicle-to-grid technology project, which sells electricity from vehicles to the wholesale market, and is promoting legislation that requires Delaware utilities to procure energy efficiency when it is cheaper than buying energy from the grid.
Public Service Award — Madeline Rogero, mayor of Knoxville, Tenn.  Elected three years ago, she has distinguished herself by implementing urban development policies and programs aimed at enhancing the quality of life and environmental attractiveness of Knoxville, including working to bring $10 million in financing for energy efficiency projects to businesses in Knoxville and Knox County.
Public Service Award — Marla Graff Decker, secretary of the Virginia Office of Public Safety. Under the leadership of Secretary Decker, the Virginia Department of Corrections made a measurable commitment to energy, water and operational efficiency through a multi-phased program expected to reduce the department's electricity use by more than 276 million kWH and water use by over 3.6 billion gallons over 15 years.

MILWAUKEE, June 24, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- A more energy efficient experience awaits the performers and guests at the Johnson Controls World Sound Stage as Summerfest, the world's largest music festival, kicks off in Milwaukee June 26.

Johnson Controls, a global leader in delivering solutions that increase energy efficiency in buildings, recently signed a three year sponsorship with Milwaukee World Festival, Inc. that allows the company to help improve the efficiency of its sponsored stage.

"Johnson Controls works on sustainability projects around the world and to show how we can help make Summerfest, located in our hometown, more energy efficient, is a great way to tell our story to thousands of music lovers who will enjoy this world-class festival," said Ward Komorowski, director of global facilities for Johnson Controls.

Improvements provided by Johnson Controls World Sound Stage include:

•Replacement of lamps in the seating area with energy efficient LED bulbs
•Split system high efficiency air conditioning units for the backstage dressing rooms and offices
•Installation of Metasys® building management system that will provide real-time information on energy usage in the stage area
To help festival goers learn more about what makes the Johnson Controls World Sound Stage more energy efficient, a sustainability tower will be located at the entrance to the seating area. This tower will allow Summerfest goers the ability to see the energy improvement results being measured in real-time basis.

The tower will house a wind turbine and solar panels which will demonstrate how energy can be captured and used to power the displays on the tower.  

Johnson Controls estimates the annual energy savings to the stage area for the festival will be 7,700,000 watt hours, enough to power a Fender Frontman® guitar amplifier for 21,418 hours.

Johnson Controls installed its Panoptix® building efficiency platform to work in tandem with its Metasys® building management system already installed on the campus. Together, the two systems collect, manage, analyze and present data through applications that can be accessed on most electronic devices, including mobile phones.  The applications provide detailed information into how building systems are functioning, how to make equipment last longer, and how to make operations more efficient.

"Panoptix gives our facility managers the ability to take advantage of the full capabilities of their building automation systems. They've always known lots of data is gathered, and there's value in it but they haven't had the time or the resources to sift, sort and interpret it. So its value has remained locked up and beyond reach," said Dale Dyer, plant operations manager, WKU. "Panoptix has changed that."

WKU recovered their investment in the Panoptix platform in less than six months by addressing system faults that pointed to equipment that was wasting energy by not performing optimally. These savings and other retrofit savings on the WKU campus may be reinvested to purchase new, more efficient equipment. For example, savings from a recent retrofit program were reinvested to purchase two new natural gas boilers to replace inefficient boilers.

Johnson Controls, ein weltweit führender Anbieter von Autositzen, Sitzkomponenten, automobiler Innenausstattung und Elektronik, hat heute mit Zhejiang Wanfang New Materials Co., Ltd. ("Zhejiang Wanfang") eine Vereinbarung zur Gründung eines Joint Venture in Haining in der chinesischen Provinz Zhejiang unterzeichnet. Johnson Controls ist eines der ersten Global Fortune 500-Unternehmen, die in Haining investieren.

Das neue Joint Venture erhält den Namen Zhejiang Johnson Controls Wanfang Textile Technology Co., Ltd. Es wird Automobilhersteller in China und weiteren Ländern mit Automobil- und Funktionstextilien für Fahrzeugsitze und Innenraumkomponenten beliefern.

Johnson Controls stellt auf der IAA innovatives Fertigungsverfahren für zweifarbige Oberflächen von Türverkleidungen vor

Johnson Controls, ein weltweit führendes Unternehmen in der automobilen Elektronik und Innenausstattung, stellt auf der 65. Internationalen Automobil-Ausstellung (IAA) in Frankfurt erstmals ein neues Konzept zur Fertigung zweifarbiger Türverkleidungen vor. Das Verfahren ermöglicht die qualitativ hochwertige und kosteneffiziente Applikation zweifarbiger Oberflächen auf einem einteiligen Träger.

Die präzise Positionierung der sichtbaren farbigen Trennlinie in einer Nut erfordert keine Abdeckung mehr und sorgt bei gleichzeitiger Reduzierung der Kosten für eine Qualitätsanmutung, die bislang nur im Premiumsegment zu finden war. Anstatt zwei Verkleidungsteile mit unterschiedlichen Farben zu verwenden, erlaubt das neue Folienverfahren von Johnson Controls den Einbau einer mehrfarbigen Türverkleidung mit konturierter Designlinie, die als komplette Türtafel verbaut werden kann.

Um zweifarbige Türverkleidungen zu produzieren, mussten bislang zwei farbverschiedene Verkleidungsteile montiert und anschließend miteinander verschweißt werden. Die wenig ansehnliche Farbtrennlinie erforderte meist kostspielige Abdeckungen. Das innovative zweifarbige Folienverfahren von Johnson Controls bietet im Gegensatz dazu auf einem Träger eine qualitativ hochwertige Farbtrennlinie durch die exakte Positionierung in einer Nut. Simulationsmethoden und neuartige Werkzeugtechnologien, die während des Produktentwicklungsprozesses zum Einsatz kommen, sichern dabei ein gleichbleibend hochwertiges Produkt zu geringeren Kosten als bei heutigen zweifarbigen Lösungen.

"Produktionstechnisch haben wir eine sehr effiziente Technologie entwickelt, wobei das neue Zweifarbfolienverfahren bedeutendes Marktpotenzial bietet. Diese einfache und kostensparende Technologie erlaubt auch zweifarbige Lösungen mit entsprechender Qualitätsanmutung in niedrigeren Fahrzeugsegmenten", sagt Han Hendriks, Vice President Advanced Product Development bei Johnson Controls Automotive Electronics & Interiors.

Auch eine zukünftige Anwendung mit Folien aus thermoplastischem Polyolefin (TPO) ist möglich. Das optimierte Verfahren zur Herstellung zweifarbiger Türverkleidungen überzeugt neben der Reduzierung von Gewicht, Kosten- und Logistikaufwand durch eine deutlich verbesserte Noise-Vibration-Harshness- und Crash- Performance. Das patentierte Zweifarbfolienverfahren von Johnson Controls ist für Fahrzeuge ab dem Modelljahr 2016 einsetzbar.

Presence in China will get stronger with 11 new production facilities

Johnson Controls, a global leader in automotive seating, seating components, automotive electronics, and interiors, will expand in China: After 16 years of continuous growth, Johnson Controls Automotive Experience plans to increase its number of production locations from 57 to 68 in China over the next few years.

Thanks to strategic partnerships with Chinese partners, Johnson Controls Automotive Experience is very well positioned in the growth market of China, recording sales of approximately US $4.6 billion in 2012 and employing nearly 25,000 people (including joint ventures) in the country.

Since beginning operations in China in 1997, the company has continuously expanded its activities in the country. Johnson Controls Automotive Experience is now engaged in 32 joint ventures with 24 strategic partners. The company operates 57 production plants in 27 cities in China, a number that is expected to increase to 68 over the next few years.

The automotive supplier is highly vertically integrated in China. Besides its extensive manufacturing footprint, Johnson Controls operates ten engineering sites in eight Chinese cities. With more than 1,150 engineers and 44 designers, the company has established expert capabilities in design, development, engineering, and product safety testing.

Over the last 16 years, Johnson Controls' two biggest Chinese joint ventures - Shanghai Yanfeng Johnson Controls Seating Co., Ltd.
