BAC 10.84, +0.46, +4.4%) both suggested their respective banks were profitable during the first two months of the year, and the market hasn't paused to look back.
Taken in context, however, AIG is no Citi or B. of A. It is the ultimate black hole for government cash. Insurance is a good business, but even in its most profitable years, AIG never posted much more than $10 billion in profits. At that rate, it will take at least until 2025 to make taxpayers whole, unless it hires Bernie Madoff as chief financial officer.
Plus, there is something to be said for the lack of veracity of financial statements and chief executives these days. Ben Bernanke, the Federal Reserve chairman, on Tuesday contradicted Lewis. Bernanke said he never urged B. of A.'s Lewis to keep quiet about Merrill Lynch & Co. bonuses. See full story.
AIG's Liddy, who endured congressional grief and public outrage over his company's bonuses in March, could teach Lewis about what not to do when it comes to defending shocking payments.
As for all financial companies, let's save the congratulations until all of them have repaid taxpayers.

The 185-metre structure, among the most recognisable in the city's skyline, is to be renamed on the wishes of American International Assurance, a leading AIG subsidiary and majority owner of the building.
Tenants of the 40-storey tower, which include the UK's Royal Bank of Scotland, were recently informed that the building would be named after AIA, Asia's leading regional life insurance group. The final name will be decided shortly.
The move will be seen as symbolic of AIG's woes and the fact that AIA is increasingly seeking to assert its own brand identity - possibly as a prelude to a flotation in Hong Kong this year.
The move forms part of an AIA policy to achieve regional brand consistency. The life assurer is also moving to rename its operations in South Korea, Vietnam, Indonesia and Australia, which currently use the AIG monicker.
"Renaming AIG Tower sends a subtle but important signal that AIA is charting its own course," said one person familiar with the matter.
AIA said that changing the building's name would "enhance AIA's brand visibility in the city and provide clarity on its ownership".
AIA boasts 20m policyholders across 13 countries, employs 200,000 tied agents and last year made an aggregate operating profit of about $2bn.
The US government rescued AIG last September after credit-default swap losses brought the company to the verge of collapse.
The government now holds a near-80 per cent stake in what was previously the world's most respected insurance group.
AIG earlier this year tried to divest AIA to raise up to $20bn to help repay a US government loan. But it scrapped the sale after attracting only lukewarm interest from potential bidders.
Blow for AIG as landmark Hong Kong tower is rename
AIG and US authorities in March announced plans to separate AIA and place it in to a special purpose vehicle.
The renaming comes as AIG is close to selling its Japanese headquarters for about $1bn, according to people familiar with the matter.
The expected buyer is a Japanese insurance company.
It is understood that a sale of International Lease Finance Corp, AIG's aircraft leasing business, may also be close.
DE000CG1HCW2 wie wärs mit dem?? Sieht auf den ersten Blick richtig aus, aber ich hab grad gar keine Zeit, also falls ich was übersehen hab. ;)

American International Group, Inc. (AIG) could very well rally above $2 this week. May options show the $2 calls are currently trading at $0.14 and Jun $2 calls trading at $0.29. AIG chart technicals are showing very bullish money flow with the macd indicator on the 1 month chart giving a buy signal.
AIG is expected to post a first-quarter loss on Thursday. A source that has declined to be named says the loss in the first quarter is expected to be significantly lower than its fourth-quarter loss of $61.7 billion, adding that AIG will not need a capital injection from the U.S. government.
The earnings whisper has an 81% chance that AIG will beat estimates. Now would be the time to consider buying AIG as a new uptrend is starting.
Disclosure: Long AIG with $1.50 stop loss
