UPDATE 2-ATI shares enjoy rumors of Microsoft deal
       FRIDAY, JUNE 13, 2003 5:29 PM
- Reuters U.S. Company News

(Adds closing prices. In U.S. dollars unless noted)

By Franco Pingue

TORONTO, June 13 (Reuters) - Rumors that ATI Technologies Inc. (CA:ATY) (ATYT) has been selected for a major contract by Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) helped push up the shares of the graphics chip maker on Friday, but analysts were not buying the rumor.

Shares of ATI rose 46 cents, or 5.8 percent, to close at $8.40 on Nasdaq. On the Toronto Stock Exchange, the stock finished 40 Canadian cents, or 3.7 percent, higher at C$11.18, while the broader information technology sector was down 2.4 percent

According to a computer games Web site, ATI is said to have been selected by the world's largest software maker to supply graphic technology for the still unannounced next generation Xbox console.

Both ATI and Microsoft declined to comment on the Internet reports, but industry analysts were dismissing the news and waiting for an official statement from the companies.

"We think ATI is reasonably well positioned but we don't expect any news on this front until later this year," said David Hodgson, an analyst with Dundee Securities. "Therefore, we're looking at this as just a rumor."

Hodgson, who does not own ATI stock, has a "market outperform" rating on the shares.

The analyst said Microsoft will likely wait for Sony to release a development schedule for its PlayStation 3 before deciding which direction they want for Xbox.

The Web site says Microsoft will dump Nvidia Corp. (NVDA) because of its inability to work cohesively with the chip designer.

Shares of Nvidia dropped $1.98, or 7.8 percent, to $23.47 on Nasdaq.

"The rumors are definitely out there," said Brian Alger, an analyst with Pacific Growth Equities. "But we think it's a decision that has not been made yet and it is purely speculation to guess as to who may or may not win."

($1=$1.33 Canadian)
