Zacks Buy List Highlights: Apollo Group, JetBlue Airways, Covad Communications, and Packeteer
FRIDAY, AUGUST 15, 2003 6:00 AM
- BusinessWire
CHICAGO, Aug 15, 2003 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Zacks.com releases another list of stocks that are currently members of the coveted Zacks #1 Ranked list which has produced an average annual return of +33.6% since 1988 and has gained +13.3% annually since 2000 as the markets have been tumbling down. Among the #1 ranked stocks today we highlight the following companies: Apollo Group, Inc. (APOL) and JetBlue Airways Corporation (JBLU) . Further they announced #2 Rankings (Buy) on three other widely held stocks: Covad Communications Group, Inc. (COVD) and Packeteer, Inc. (PKTR) . To see the full Zacks #1 Ranked list or the rank for any other stock then visit. http://www.zacksrank1bw.zacks.com
Here is a synopsis of why these stocks have a Zacks Rank of 1 (Strong Buy). Note that a #1 Strong Buy rating is applied to 5% of all the stocks we rank:
Apollo Group, Inc. (APOL) provides higher education to working adults. The desire and need for adults to further their education keeps this company's earnings estimates at heightened levels from months back. Analysts have also turned attention toward other education companies, such as Career Education (CECO) . Net income attributed to Apollo Education Group for the three months ended May 31, 2003 was $69.8 million, or 39 cents per diluted share, compared to $48.4 million, or 27 cents per diluted share, reported for the same period last year. Net income attributed to University of Phoenix Online (UOPX) for the three months ended May 31, 2003, was $4.4 million, or 27 cents per diluted share, compared to $2.4 million or 16 cents per diluted share, reported for the same period last year. Total consolidated revenues for Apollo Group, Inc. for the three months ended May 31, 2003 rose +31.8% to $364.2 million, compared with $276.3 million in the third quarter of fiscal 2002. Diluted earnings per share attributed to Apollo Education Group are expected to be 33 cents for the quarter ending August 31, 2003 and to be $1.27 for fiscal 2003. Diluted earnings per share attributed to University of Phoenix Online are expected to be 26 cents for the quarter ending August 31, 2003 and to be 90 cents for fiscal 2003. The company will issue a press release to provide its business outlook for first quarter of fiscal 2004 ending Nov. 30, 2003 and the fiscal year ending Aug. 31, 2004. The release will be issued before market on Aug. 28th. Analysts are hopeful that APOL will turn in another solid report and continue to reward investors.
JetBlue Airways Corporation (JBLU) is a low-fare, low-cost passenger airline, which provides high-quality customer service primarily on point-to-point routes. The airline industry looks to be getting stronger, even with the threat of continued terrorist activity. Earlier this month, the company reported its highest ever monthly load factor in July at 90.6%, which is 2.8 points above July 2002 and was accomplished with a completion factor of 100.0% and on-time performance of 88.6%. Traffic in July increased 79.2% from July 2002, on a capacity increase of 73.7%. In July, JBLU reported that operating revenues for the quarter totaled $244.7 million, representing growth of 63.9% over operating revenues of $149.3 million in the second quarter of 2002. Net income for the quarter was $37.9 million, representing earnings of 55 cents per diluted share, compared with second quarter 2002 net income of $14.6 million, or 22 cents per diluted share. Net income reflects the company's receipt of $22.8 million in compensation related to the Emergency War Time Supplemental Appropriations Act. Net of income taxes and profit-sharing, this amounts to $11.5 million, or 17 cents per diluted share. This positive news sent the stock's price soaring, and is up about +7% already for the month of August. If earnings continue to be strong, the sky is the limit for this low-cost airline.
Here is a synopsis of why these stocks have a Zacks Rank of 2 (Buy). Note that a #2 Buy rating is applied to 15% of all the stocks we rank:
Covad Communications Group, Inc. (COVD) is a leading national broadband service provider of high-speed Internet and network access. Last month they reported results for the second quarter ended June 30, 2003. During the quarter COVD increased digital subscriber lines by 36,000 to over 453,000, which was a 9% increase over lines in service at the end of the first quarter of 2003. The company improved revenue to $92.4 million compared to first quarter 2003 revenue of $90.9 million and (EBITDA) was a loss of $8.4 million compared to a loss of $15.7 million in the first quarter of 2003. The company also improved upon the first quarter's net loss of 16 cents by posting a net loss of $27.3 million, or 12 cents per share, beating the Street's estimate by +20%. Working in a very dynamic environment, COVD delivered another quarter of growth by achieving improvement in every major operating area. These efforts, along with the introduction of a significant cost-reduction program, are proof that Covad is successfully executing its business strategy of being the only operator of a national broadband network, while simultaneously remaining on track to deliver on their profitability goals. COVD and other tech firms like Epicor Software (EPIC) and Findwhat Communication (FWHT) are on the high-speed road to recovery after the tech bubble burst taking investors with them.
Packeteer, Inc. (PKTR) is a leading provider of application traffic management systems. In mid-July, the company reported second quarter 2003 net income of 8 cents per share on net revenues of $17.5 million. The earnings result quadrupled the year-ago result of 2 cents and matched the consensus, while revenue beat the year-ago total of $13.1 million and the sequential result by +4%. Earnings estimates for the company have improved slightly over the past several months, but Packeteer has been able to beat or meet rising earnings expectations for several quarters in a row now. Furthermore, analysts expect next year's result to be approximately +28% better than this year. The company stated that it is focusing the business toward continued revenue and profit growth in a difficult economy. With results like these and products such as the PacketShaper Xpress(TM), Packeteer appears to have good momentum heading forward and could help bring more profitable traffic into your portfolio.

About the Zacks Rank
For over 15 years the Zacks Rank has proven that "Earnings estimate revisions are the most powerful force impacting stock prices." Since 1988 the #1 Ranked stocks have generated an average annual return of +33.6% compared to the (a)S&P 500 return of only +11.3%. Plus this exclusive stock list has generated average gains of +13.3% during the last 3 years; a substantial return compared to the large losses suffered by most investors during that time frame. Also note that the Zacks Rank system has just as many Strong Sell recommendations (Rank #5) as Strong Buy recommendations (Rank #1). And since 1988 the S&P 500 has outperformed the Zacks #5 Ranked stocks by 166.7% annually (11.3% vs. 4.2% respectively). Thus, the Zacks Rank system can truly be used to effectively manage the trading in your portfolio.

So solls bleiben.
Gruss E.
