Verizon Business Adds Nortel Services for New Managed Telepresence Offering
TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 11/13/08 -- Verizon Business(2) has selected Nortel(1) (TSX: NT)(NYSE: NT) to help deliver a new managed telepresence offering that allows organizations to collaborate over IP networks.
Telepresence makes real-time, life-size visual communications and collaboration as effective as 'being there,' helping companies increase staff productivity while lowering operating costs and reducing environmental impact.
Companies can maximize these benefits by leveraging Verizon Business' expansive global private IP network with Nortel managed telepresence services provided from Nortel Multimedia Network Operations Centers (MNOCs) around the world.
By Nortel's calculations, a company spending as much as US$23 million annually on travel can use telepresence to recover as many as 385,000 hours of lost productivity, reduce its carbon footprint by up to 4,200 tons and save up to US$7 million.

TORONTO, Dec 3 (Reuters) - Telus Corp (T.TO: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), Canada's No. 2 phone company, said on Wednesday it is buying new technology from Nortel Networks Corp (NT.TO: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz)(NT.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) that lets telecom companies quadruple the capacity of their networks.
Telus's deployment of 40G optical technology from Nortel, North America's biggest maker of telephone equipment, comes after rival Canadian telecom group BCE Inc (BCE.TO: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) announced in September that it would be using it.
Financial terms weren't disclosed.
The Nortel technology delivers speeds of 40 gigabits per second (Gbps) -- about four times faster than today's high-end networking speeds -- over fiber-optic cables thinner than a human hair.
Current high-end network speeds of 10 Gbps can support the bandwidth of 1,000 high-definition television channels simultaneously.
Telecom companies are looking for ways to quickly and cheaply bulk up their networks as demand for bandwidth explodes, driven by the popularity of online video, music and gaming. (Reporting by Wojtek Dabrowski; editing by Peter Galloway)

The new LTE network from Hitachi and Nortel will provide an overlay to the existing CDMA mobile network, enabling instant access to the bandwidth-intense multimedia content and applications demanded by KDDI's tech savvy 30 million mobile consumers and business users. The network will significantly improve user experience through greatly reduced download times for music and video services as well as providing anywhere, anytime access to bandwidth-hungry applications such as video, real-time mobile games and online services. The network will also help lower costs for KDDI and ensure seamless interoperability with the current 3G CDMA network.
Through its 'Challenge 2010' initiative, KDDI is striving for impeccable customer service by delivering the value users seek from its communications solutions. High levels of reliability, convenience, service differentiation and customer satisfaction are key aims of the LTE network deployment.

'40G Ready' Express Network Adds Capacity to Meet Increased Customer Demand

SURF Telecoms is a southwest and Wales-based supplier of managed services including dark optical fibre, carrier wholesale bandwidth and leased lines. The enhanced optical network from Nortel will address the growing demand for high-capacity services in the southwest of the UK.
The express network, due to come into service this month, will help SURF Telecoms activate and deliver services rapidly and efficiently across the southwest. The network upgrade also extends the efficiency of SURF Telecoms' existing WDM networks and operations by aggregating more traffic onto 10G before regional transport.

Nashville (aktiencheck.de AG) - Der kanadische Netzwerkausrüster Nortel Networks Corp. (ISIN CA6565685089/ WKN A0LENQ) prüft derzeit ein Gläubigerschutz-Szenario für den Fall, dass seine Restrukturierungspläne nicht greifen.
Wie das "Wall Street Journal" am Mittwoch berichtet, hat der Konzern demnach eine entsprechende Rechtsberatung in Anspruch genommen und zieht darüber hinaus eine mögliche Unterstützung durch die kanadische Regierung in Betracht.
Laut der Zeitung teilte ein Sprecher des Unternehmens indes mit, dass kein Antrag auf Gläubigerschutz unmittelbar bevorsteht. Gleichwohl habe Nortel mehrere Berater hinzugezogen, um für die Zukunft zu planen.

Nortel’s move to exit from the metro Ethernet networks business vertical has reportedly attracted vendors including Huawei, Cisco, Ericsson and Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) says Canada’s Globe and Mail.
The report further adds that Nortel is entertaining three bids out of the four and the deal value is pegged at around $ 2 billion.
The report also speculates that Nortel may consider selling of assets which may see the company exit the carrier networks business instead of filing for bankruptcy.

Sources inform ''Globes'' that Radware Ltd. (Nasdaq: RDWR; TASE: RDWR) is about to acquire a unit of Nortel Networks Corporation (NYSE; TSX: NT) for $30-50 million. Radware has $137.4 million in cash, including short and long-term investments, giving it the wherewithal for a deal.
Nortel has four business divisions, one of which competes against Radware, Cisco Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: CSCO), and F5 Networks Inc. (Nasdaq: FFIV). The divisions are the Carrier Networks segment, which offers wireline and wireless networks; the Solutions segment, which offers enterprise communications solutions for businesses in various industries; the Metro Ethernet Networks segment, which provides carrier ethernet switching, optical networking, and multi-service switching products; and the Global Services segment, which offers network implementation services.

Radware reportedly wants to acquire all or part of the Metro Ethernet Networks segment.
Nortel's share price fell 98% in 2008, and its current market cap is $144 million. Radware fell 3% at the opening on Nasdaq today to $5.74, giving a market cap of $111 million. Its share price fell 58% last year. The share fell 5.3% on the TASE today to NIS 22.06.
