In regard to your first statement about written info from someone knowledgeable: No one knows Calypte better than Dr. George and Rick Brounstein. Although it's unlikely that any of us could talk directly to them. You can however check Calypte’s website and read the latest filings and news articles. I find the NR’s very informative. Plus you can listen to Conference Calls when available. I still have some of the transcripts from the most recent CC’s, they are some of the most valuable sources for me. I try to post these when someone mentions a subject that Dr. George covered, such as your question today.
Another source of info that I recommend is from readssthe10qs. I know that is going to shock some people here because most of his posts are quite negative. The reason I read his posts is because sometimes my perspective is too one sided. He knows the history of Calypte and especially its former Chairman of the Board, Tony Cataldo. As an example of why I like to read his posts - there was a question from “umpujv” #2653 about HIV’s cumulative debt. Because readssthe10qs posts are usually negative you know that if Calypte had any debt he would have found it.
As a word of caution: The yahoo board can get ugly at times so you have to let some of it roll off your back otherwise you can get cynical.
As far as the prediction of .05 cent/share: No one from the Company as far as I know has ever made that statement. The information from the CC in my post was an estimate for when the Company might be profitable. They came to that conclusion by using minimal penetration rates in China and Africa. Those sales are contingent upon government approvals.
You also mentioned production of rapid tests starting soon. Dr. George said in the November CC…
“The SFDA, because we are considered to be a Chinese company, due to our Joint Ventures, will give us what is called the “Green Light Pass” through the regulatory process. On this path, they have a regulatory requirement to respond to our application in 90 days. We’ve padded that a little, but just to give us some cushion. We are predicting that we will have an answer from the SFDA by July 1st of 2005.”
So, first the clinical results, second, SFDA approval, third, SALES.

Let’s say Calypte’s revenue was $25M per year. That would be 8x present earnings. Should the stock price go up by 8? If it did the price would be $2.80 per share. But a company that increases it’s earnings by 8 will draw lots of attention from investors and that is the variable that is impossible to equate. Let’s say it goes to $50M per year. That’s almost 17x present earnings the price would be $6.12 per share. The time it takes to increase revenues will also be a factor, the shorter the time the higher the PPS.
If you look at OSUR, they have a market cap at $303M. It trades at 5.6x earnings, but some stocks trade at much higher multiples. A stock trading at 44x earnings is not impossible. If Calypte’s earnings were $25M and we traded at 44x earnings the price would be $5.50 per share. The PPS would double to $11.00 per share if revenue was $50M. At that price it would have a market cap of 2.2B which is inconceivable to me.
A good way to project earnings is to calculate the maximum capacity of each manufacturing plant. We know that the capacity of China and Thailand is around 100M. To use that as a guide is reasonable. I think it is very possible to achieve those figures with the present government/institutional funding and the great need for testing. We don’t know what the Rockville capacity will be. We also don’t know the profit scale for US sales in the professional and OTC markets. If the machinery is running at maximum capacity and they still can’t fill all the orders will they invest in new equipment and increase capacity to fill the demand? What about the other STD tests that Dr. George mentioned in the November CC. Some of those markets are larger than HIV/AIDS. Also, each year Calypte could gain more and more of the market for each test that’s available. These are some things to think about.
I don’t know if this helps you. It only seems makes the question bigger.
