Das US DoD soll durch bestehende Behörden strategische und kritische Mineralien aufkaufen und zwar von inländischen Produzenten, die diese in den nächsten fünf Jahren produzieren können.

In a report accompanying the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2018, the Senate Armed Services Committee "strongly encourages the Department of Defense to make use of existing authorities ... to enter into commitments to purchase strategic and critical materials ... from domestic producers that the Department believes are likely to initiate commercial production of such materials within the next five years."

Apple has notably said that it will attempt to use only recycled rare earth elements in its products in future due to concerns over environmental impact and human rights, but it isn’t sure how to achieve that yet.  Vielleicht wäre ja ein Einstieg bei Ashram/MRT was für Apple?

Clean energy transition to increase demand for minerals — World Bank

A new World Bank report released today highlights the potential impacts that the expected continuing boom in low-carbon energy technologies will have on demand for many minerals and metals.

Using wind, solar, and energy storage batteries as key examples of low-carbon or “green” energy technologies, the report, “The Growing Role of Minerals and Metals for a Low-Carbon Future” examines the types of minerals and metals that will likely increase in demand as the world works towards commitments to keep the global average temperature rise at or below 2°C.

Minerals and metals expected to see heightened demand include: ...rare earth minerals such as ...neodymium.

Big winners will be ...and rare earths.

This CEO Wants Trump to Nationalize the Only Rare-Earth Mine in America

by Sally Bakewell19. Juli 2017,

The head of an advanced-materials manufacturer said he met with President Donald Trump’s chief strategist, Steve Bannon, on Monday to persuade him that the U.S. should nationalize the country’s only mine of rare earth minerals, which are used in military applications.

“The staff understood the urgency of the matter,” Michael Silver, chief executive officer of closely held American Elements Corp., said in a phone interview after his White House meeting, which he said was also attended by presidential deputy assistant Sebastian Gorka and White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus.

The mine (Mountain Pass) should be converted to a national laboratory “dedicated to rebuilding America’s rare-earth mining industry so the world knows it is safe to build high-tech manufacturing plants in the U.S.,” Silver said.

Silver said he was invited to brief the president on the issue on Tuesday.

Rare Earth Mania And China/US Trade Spat 2.0?

The current story behind the higher prices is that China is getting serious (again) about the environmental impact of REE mining, and is making renewed efforts to curb significant levels of illegal production. On Monday, managing director of Australian-based rare earth producer, Lynas Corp (who just happened to note how her company is “highly leveraged to any increase in price for NdPr”) commented.

“Demand has always been strong, growth for the magnetic materials will increase as there is greater adoption, particularly for electric vehicles…(and) wind turbines. The second thing, however is that the Chinese central government has been very active over the last six months in ensuring that a lot of what had been announced recently, has actually been enforced on the ground…they have inspected a lot of plants to ensure that they have proper documentation for their raw materials and that has helped to eliminate illegal supply.”

Closer to home, the price of the VanEck Rare Earth/Strategic Metals ETF has also been moving higher...
http://www.finviz.com/quote.ashx?t=remx

With a market cap of $62m and small/mid cap constituents, things could get interesting if REE prices enter a sustained bull phase.
