Fuel cell stocks giddy ahead of DOE plan (BLDP, FCEL, PLUG, HPOW) by

Ballard Power (BLDP) is powering up $3.35, or 11 percent, to $33.76. Analyst Jarett Carson at RBC Capital Markets thinks the details of the U.S. Dept. of Energy's Freedom CAR program, slated for release Wednesday, could be a "significant and unexpected catalyst for the transportations fuel cell industry," in light of the Bush Administration's
commitment to a hydrogen infrastructure. Carson believes that if all of the current funding for the Partnership for a New Generation Vehicle (PNGV) program, which is being replaced by Freedom CAR, is rolled into the new program, "it would represent a three-fold increase over our current
estimates of DOE funding levels at $30 million to $40 million." Among others in the fuel cell business, FuelCell Energy (FCEL) is charging up $3.03 to $20.95, Plug Power (PLUG) is surging $2.34 to $11.00 and H-Power (HPOW) is plowing 82 cents higher to $4.12.

Na das klingt ja ganz nett. Bin aber noch ein bißchen unter meinem Einkaufskurs von 52€ oder so ca. in der Gegend...
Aber wer die hat, hat die sowieso als Langfristinvestment. Die werden sich (wenn sich die Technologie durchsetzt) erst in ein paar Jahren wirklich rechnen.

Energy Officials Try to Get Local Governments Fired Up about Fuel Cells
Nov 08, 2001 (Times Union - Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News via COMTEX) -- When Robert J. Cordell, chief commercial building inspector in the town of Colonie, first heard that Plug Power Inc. wanted to install a fuel cell at its test house, he was at a loss.

"We basically didn't know anything about it," he said of the technology. "Nobody knew anything about it."

While Latham-based Plug had figured out how to make electricity out of a chemical reaction, building inspectors were having a hard time figuring out which of the town codes suited an at-home power plant.

That kind of confusion is ripe to be duplicated nationwide as a growing array of on-site power generators becomes available. The U.S. Department of Energy expects up to 20 percent of the nation's power to be made on-site by 2020 -- by everything from fuel cells to microturbines and other types of distributed generation.

How will the supplies of volatile hydrogen or natural gas needed to run the generators be handled? How will the units be connected to the power grid, so excess power can be put on the market -- rather than just sucked off it? And what about emissions?

Fearing that unfamiliarity with the technology will result in roadblocks to that growth, the Department of Energy's Office of Distributed Energy Resources has embarked on a 150-city road show to teach local officials about distributed generation and why not to fear it. On Wednesday, Albany became the seventh city to see the tour at a day-long program at Empire State Plaza.

"What we're trying to deal with now is not really a new issue," said Anne-Marie Borbely-Bartis, an adviser to the department who works for the Battelle Memorial Institute, a private research and development firm headquartered in Columbus, Ohio.

In the 1970s, when solar power was the rage, the same code problems surfaced.

Now, solar panels are no problem to install. "Photovoltaics, I think, has 49 references in national standards and buildings codes," Borbely-Bartis said.

In New York, the issues are starting to be considered. The state Department of Environmental Conservation, for example, is about to begin a review of its own regulations to accommodate the small generators; rules should be set in a year to a year and a half.

"We've always thought of electricity as a wall socket," said Borbely-Bartis, who has written a book on the topic called "Distributed Generation: Power Paradigm for the New Millennium." "We've never thought of power generation in your house."

It's a long way, though, before a person will go to a Home Depot store, buy a fuel cell, and install it with no headache.

"At least 10 years," said David P. Hoffman, president and chief executive of Portland, Ore.-based Celerity Energy LLC. "It's really not the technology. It's the process we're all struggling to get through."

Die Aktien der Brennstoffzellenhersteller befinden sich aktuell in einer Kursrallye nach dem die US-Regierung ihre breite Unterstützung zum Aufbau einer Wasserstoff-Infrastruktur signalisiert hatte. Der Analyst Jarett Carson von RBC Capital Markets erwartet für morgen neue Details vom US-Energieministerium, welche einen "signifikanten und unerwarteten Katalysator für die Brennstoffzellenindustrie" sein könnten. Der Analyst erwarte, daß die Bush-Regierung etwa 30-40 Mio $ in den kommenden Monaten in den Sektor investieren würde. Die Aktien des Marktführers Ballard Power konnten zuletzt 11,25% zulegen, auch die Aktien von Plug Power, H-Power und FuelCellEnergy konnten sich deutlich verteuern.

Die Analysten der Investmentbank Morgan Stanley Dean Witter stufen die Aktie von Ballard Power Systems (WKN 890704) unverändert mit "strong buy" ein.

Das Kursziel sehe man derzeit bei 45 US-Dollar. In Anbetracht des Kursziel erachte man die momentane Bewertung des Titels als zwingend. Man denke, dass es zwar mögliche unternehmensspezifische Faktoren für den Aktienkurs gebe, doch erkenne man auch den Umstand an, dass Ballard Power von einer verbesserten Stimmung der Märkte gegenüber Technologieaktien abhängig sei, um kurzfristig einen deutlichen Aufschwung zu erfahren.

Ballard Power dürfte vor 2005 keine Gewinne erwirtschaften oder einen positiven Cash flow erzielen. Doch das Unternehmen verfüge über ausreichend finanzielle Mittel um sich bis zur Profitabilität zu finanzieren.

Vor diesem Hintergrund bewerten die Experten von Morgan Stanley Dean Witter die Aktie von Ballard Power Systems mit dem Rating "strong buy".

Heute gabs Zahlen, hab ich aber noch nicht gefunden, sahen wohl gar nicht schlecht aus dem Chartbild nach zu urteilen.
15% plus um die Zahlen herum lässt doch  erwarten, daß die ganz nett waren und
Ballard sich wieder aufrafft.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 7, 2002-- Today, Ballard Power Systems' (TSX:BLD) (NASDAQ: BLDP, news) alliance partner, DaimlerChrysler AG, unveiled two next-generation fuel cell vehicles in Stuttgart, Germany powered by Ballard(R) fuel cell engines. Prof. Jurgen Hubbert, Member of the DaimlerChrysler Board of Management with responsibility for the Mercedes-Benz, Maybach and Smart Passenger Car Division, stated DaimlerChrysler's intention to introduce 60 Mercedes-Benz A-Class "F-Cell" vehicles. These vehicles will be introduced in limited customer fleets in Europe, Japan, Singapore and the United States beginning in 2003. Mercedes-Benz A-Class "F-Cell" vehicles are DaimlerChrysler's first fuel cell cars to move from the research stage to customer demonstrations.




"This commitment by DaimlerChrysler demonstrates how automobile manufacturers will introduce new technology on the path to mass commercialization of fuel cell vehicles," said Dennis Campbell, Ballard's President and Chief Operating Officer. "DaimlerChrysler's cars will use our latest generation fuel cell powertrain, that delivers world-leading performance, as recently demonstrated by Ford's Focus FCV fuel cell vehicle that completed the Michelin Challenge Bibendum road rally in Germany and France."

Ballard's latest generation 85 kW automotive fuel cell engine (which includes the gas supply system, control unit and fuel cell module) has a higher net power output which, combined with reduced weight and lower volume, results in a 60-percent improvement in power density over previous generation technology. This has also reduced system complexity, improved vehicle integration and lowered costs.

In addition to the newly christened "F-Cell" vehicles, today DaimlerChrysler also demonstrated the Citaro city bus and the Hermes Sprinter delivery van, both powered by Ballard(R) fuel cell engines. Ballard will continue to deliver heavy-duty fuel cell engines through 2003 to DaimlerChrysler for 30 Citaro city buses to be operated in revenue-service in ten major European cities.
