Arabische Welt im Umbruch
An imprisoned Libyan army colonel who surrendered to the rebel forces two months ago told AFP on Saturday that Muammar Gaddafi's regime is ridden with divisions and in the process of collapse.
Speaking from a prisoner of war camp in the rebel enclave of Misrata, Colonel Wissam Miland said Gaddafi's military hangs together through coercion and mercenary-enforced martial law, but that infighting is rife.
"I think it will soon collapse," he said, offering a rare glimpse inside Gaddafi's three-pronged loyalist force, made of up army regulars, militia fighters and mercenaries.
"Among the militias, the Libyan soldiers were starting to fight with the foreign mercenaries, there are many problems," he said in an interview.
"Gaddafi is losing now because of this," he said, pointing to a series of recent military losses suffered by the regime.
The prospect of mounting divisions among Gaddafi's fighters will be an encouraging sign for many NATO countries, which have warned that there can be no clear-cut military solution to Libya's nearly six-month-old civil war.
The prospect that Gaddafi's use of foreign mercenaries may be backfiring will also offer hope that the once oil-rich regime could be running out of options.
While it has long been known that Gaddafi has used paid fighters from Chad, Niger, Mauritania and other Sahel nations, their role has not always been clear.
"Within my unit there were a lot of mercenaries," Miland said. "But they are not fighting with the army -- they surround the army. They don't let anyone fall back. If you retreat, they will kill you."
But, Miland warned, Gaddafi is also successfully using economic, social and political levers to sustain his regime.
"Most of the soldiers are illiterate, they are just trained very hard and they are told that Gaddafi is the most important person in the world -- 'Your life depends on Gaddafi, if Gaddafi loses, you lose'," he said.
"Most soldiers fight, because they do believe that without Gaddafi they cannot leave."
And as the death toll mounts, there are also signs that Gaddafi's war effort has gathered some self-sustaining momentum.
"Some people are fighting not because they like him, but because their cousins or relatives have been killed," Miland said.

Libyan rebels claim control of the city of Zawiyah after fighting with #Qaddafi regime troops. #LibyanRebels #Alarabiya
A rebel force of about 200 fighters advancing from the south reached a bridge on Az-Zawiyah's southwestern outskirts, and some rebels pushed farther into the city's central main square.
They tore down the green flag of Gaddafi's regime from a mosque minaret and put up two rebel flags. An Associated Press reporter traveling with the rebels saw hundreds of residents rush into the streets, greeting the fighters with chants of "God is great."
Gaddafi's forces then counterattacked, unleashing rounds of heavy shelling and gunfire could be heard as rebels and government troops battled.
Regime snipers were firing down from rooftops on the rebels, said one resident, Abdel-Basset Abu Riyak, who joined to fight alongside the rebels when they entered the city. He said Gaddafi's forces were holed up in several pockets in the city and that there were reports of reinforcements coming from Tripoli, though there was no sign of them yet.
Speaking to the AP by telephone, Abu Riyak said residents were now joining up with the rebels' assault, saying, "95 percent of Az-Zawiyah's people are with the revolution."
"There is shooting from all sides," said another rebel, 23-year-old Ibrahim Akram. "The people joined us. Fierce clashes are still ongoing, but thank God our numbers are great." - Associated Press
niedergeschlagen.
sehr gefallen. Die haben G. bis zum Schluss unterstützt...

12:30om:Egyptian airport officials say the Libyan interior minister has arrived in Cairo with family members. The officials say the minister, Nassr al-Mabrouk Abdullah, landed just before noon on Monday at the Cairo international airport, with nine members of his family.
They say he arrived on a special plane from Tunisia and told Egyptian officials that he was “on a tourist visit.” The secrecy surrounding the arrival and the fact that no official from the Libyan embassy, which is loyal to Moammar Gadhafi, was at the airport to greet Abdullah, raised suspicions of a possible defection

Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi’s forces fired a scud missile for the first time since the uprising against his rule began six months ago, but it landed in the desert and injured no one.
The missile was fired on Sunday morning from a location about 80km east of Sirte, Gaddafi’s home town, and landed east of the coastal oil town of Brega.
The oil port of Brega has been the main front line in the east of the country for months. Rebels have seized the port’s eastern residential areas since last week, but Gaddafi’s forces still control its oil terminal, refinery and port.
And as Al Jazeera’s Tony Birtley reports from the city, there are several reasons why it is an important prize for the opposition.
