BEIJING, Nov 12 (Reuters) - JD.com, China's e-commerce behemoth, said on Sunday that sales for Singles' Day - and its run-up - reached 127.1 billion yuan ($19.14 billion), up 50 percent from a year ago.Sales included 11 days of transactions, JD said in a statement, unlike its rival Alibaba, which reported on Saturday that its one-day sales reached 168.3 billion yuan ($25.35 billion), up 39 percent from last year......

....JD is taking the exact opposite approach: capital heavy with huge upfront investments. In fact, it's arguably going even further than Amazon. By the end of last year, JD had 256 fulfillment warehouses and over 6,900 delivery and pickup stations spread throughout China. Impressively, the company even controls the last mile of delivery, and can guarantee same or next-day delivery in 1,400 counties and districts in China. That type of network means that JD can control inventory -- a big deal in China, where counterfeiting is rampant -- and can also offer quicker delivery than anyone. If anyone wanted to challenge that next-day delivery promise, it would be prohibitively expensive to match JD's scale, giving the company a wide moat for investors to count on.......

Another China-based company reporting third-quarter results Monday was e-commerce company JD.com ( JD ), which beat estimates. JD.com, the largest internet company in China by revenue, reported quarterly revenue of $12.58 billion, up 39% from the year-ago period. JD.com was up 5%, near 42.10.

..."JD's third-quarter sales landed in the upper half of management's revenue guidance for the quarter. The modest bottom-line profit was only the second positive reading on that line since JD started reporting results as a public company.
During the quarter, JD launched new partnerships with some of the largest e-commerce and social media brands in China in order to expand the company's marketing platform and tap into the established user bases of these new partners. Spearheading that effort, JD expanded a long-standing collaboration with social media giant Tencent (NASDAQOTH: TCEHY) , launching a shopping platform known as the JD-Tencent Retail Marketing Solution....
For the fourth quarter, JD's management expects top-line revenue to rise approximately 37% year over year to land near $17.1 billion...."

Morgan Stanley sounds caution on value
JD.com (NASDAQ:JD) has given back Monday's strong post-earnings gains, down 4.6% in U.S. trading, as analyst reactions come in to the Q3 report.
Morgan Stanley downgraded the stock to Equal Weight from Overweight, pointing to hotter competition in apparel (and more than 100 domestic apparel brands have left the platform, analyst Grace Chen notes). The stock's still got a unique value proposition, the firm says, but investors may want to seek a "better reentry point to play the long-term margin expansion story," Chen writes.
She cut her price target to $45 from $53, implying just 14% upside....

Analyst Ratings
According to the Wall Street Journal, analysts also look favorably upon JD.com. The Journal has 39 analysts covering the stock with the following breakdown of ratings:

..." JD.com is a very well-positioned company as it is in a highly popular industry (e-commerce), has exposure to the two largest economies in the world (U.S. and China) and is growing revenue at an impressive pace. As I mentioned above, one of the reasons I believe in JD long term is the fact that the company's margins are expanding while the top line is still growing. The combination of these two is what can take the market value of a company like JD.com to well over $100 billion. The stock opened Tuesday giving up most of the gains it earned after its strong 3Q 2017 report. I suggest using this as a buying opportunity and riding the Chinese e-commerce wave through JD..."

It was fairly big news that, at least according to JD.com, competitor Alibaba forced some smaller domestic Chinese apparel brands to choose between the two platforms. The result of that was that some 100 of these left the JD.com platform, and apparel revenues were flat for the quarter as a result.

Management argued that they have experienced similar ploys before but were always able to overcome these problems, from the Q3CC:

"our history experienced many of these competition, where our competitor would force the merchants choose one out of two platforms, almost every two to three years.... we have overcomed all those competitive pressures and have become the largest category leader in all of these categories. So, today out of the 14 major categories, we are the leader in 12 of them

And funny enough, apparel is one of these categories they are not leading in and the company again experienced this type of ploy. But management believes this too, will pass, from the Q3CC:

"even though our current quarter actually saw stagnant growth in the apparel category, which could also last two quarters to three quarters, but we are confident that past – beyond the next two quarters to three quarters, we will see growth resume again and just as we saw in other categories reach inflection point.

Note also that these brands that left didn't leave completely, from the Q3CC:

"So you actually see these merchants still utilizing JD platform for other services such as advertising and marketing services.

Logistics is part of service revenue. Logistics has always underpinned JD.com's competitive advantage as they have an extensive network. They are leveraging it in three ways:

The obvious way is through driving more volume, increasing density and efficiency.
But the network is opened up for third party businesses, and they hope this will gradually command over half of their logistical capabilities in five years. In the last two quarters alone, they have already attracted over 100 major brands into their logistics platform.
Innovation. The company has ongoing experiments with completely automated warehouses, drone deliveries and self-driving trucks.

https://seekingalpha.com/article/...om-fast-growth-increasing-margins

JD voran!  baba jünger raus hier bitte, danke.
