Steel, metals, coal stocks up on revised US data
Fri Feb 25, 2005 12:55 PM ET
NEW YORK, Feb 25 (Reuters) - The stocks of U.S. metals, mining, steel and coal companies rose on Friday on news that the U.S. economy had a stronger momentum at the end of 2004 than previously thought.

"This is across the board and in response to the GDP (Gross Domestic Product) revision," said one analyst who declined to be identified.

"It's nickel, steel, coal, even copper, which is ironic because the copper price is down today," he said.

Earlier, the U.S. Commerce Department said GDP, the gauge of total goods and services production, grew at a revised 3.8 percent annual rate in the final three months of last year instead of 3.1 percent reported a month ago.

That was slightly stronger than the 3.7 percent rate that Wall Street economists had forecast and only a small decline from the third quarter's 4 percent pace.

The biggest gainer was Allegheny Technologies (ATI.N: Quote, Profile, Research) , which makes stainless steel, specialty metals and alloys. Its stock was up 11.75 percent at $26.05 early Friday afternoon on the New York Stock Exchange.

Copper miner Phelps Dodge Corp. (PD.N: Quote, Profile, Research) saw its stock price surge 5.62 percent to $106.01, despite telling analysts on Thursday that first-quarter costs would be higher as a result of heavy rains at two mines in Arizona. However, it said production had so far not been affected.

Steel companies were ahead, with U.S. Steel Corp. (X.N: Quote, Profile, Research) up 4.62 percent at $62.47, Nucor (NUE.N: Quote, Profile, Research) up 2.79 percent at $63.39 and AK Steel (AKS.N: Quote, Profile, Research) higher 2.74 percent at $17.98. Steel Dynamics (STLD.O: Quote, Profile, Research) rose 5 percent to $45.99 on Nasdaq.

Shares of Alcoa (AA.N: Quote, Profile, Research) , the world's biggest aluminum producer, were selling on the NYSE for $31.87, a jump of 1.3 percent.

In the coal sector, Consol Energy (CNX.N: Quote, Profile, Research) rose 2.45 percent to $46, while Peabody Energy (BTU.N: Quote, Profile, Research) was up 3.24 percent at $99.10. Massey Energy (MEE.N: Quote, Profile, Research) was ahead 2.74 percent at $44.70 and Arch Coal (ACI.N: Quote, Profile, Research) rose 1.73 percent to $45.30.

Oil stocks rally, hit 52-week highs
By Lisa Sanders, MarketWatch
Last Update: 4:42 PM ET 2/25/05

DALLAS (MarketWatch) - Oil stocks, led by gains in shares of Exxon Mobil Corp., Anadarko Petroleum and Varco International, closed higher Friday as crude futures settled above $51 a barrel and Prudential upgraded the integrated oil group.

April crude-oil futures on the New York Mercantile Exchange closed at $51.49 a barrel, up 10 cents. See Futures Movers.

"Prices are not just fundamentally overvalued here, but are also technically overbought," said Tim Evans, an analyst with IFR Markets. "It may take more than one try for the market to reverse its intermediate-term uptrend, but we do see it beginning to try."

The Amex Oil Index ($XOI) was up 1.8 percent to close at a 52-week high of 863.09 points with Exxon Mobil Corp. (XOM) closing at a 52-week high of $63.26, up 3.5 percent, or $2.13.

Prudential Equity Group upgraded Exxon Mobil to "overweight" from "neutral," as part of a favorable call on the sector.

The firm also lifted its target price on shares of the Dow component to $70 from $57, citing its expectations of higher commodity prices.

For oil, Prudential now sees $22 per barrel downside risk, $30 per barrel normalized, and $38 per barrel upside potential. Its previous targets were $20, $25 and $30 respectively.

Prudential still expects a significant oil price correction, which could lead to moderate underperformance and a better relative buying opportunity. See Ratings Game.

A number of other oil stocks closed at 52-week highs, including ConocoPhillips (COP) , ChevronTexaco (CVX) and Marathon Oil (MRO) . See more on Marathon.

ConocoPhillips stock closed at $112.32, up 1.9 percent, or $2.14, and ChevronTexaco stock rose 1.3 percent, or 78 cents, to close at $61.94. Shares in Marathon gained 3.2 percent, or $1.44, to close at $46.63.

The Amex Natural Gas Index ($XNG) added 2.8 percent to end at a 52-week high of 329.57 points with shares of Anadarko Petroleum (APC) higher by 8 percent, or $5.73, at a 52-week high of $77.73.

The Philadelphia Oil Service Index ($OSX) rose 1.2 percent to close at a 52-week high of 142.74 points. Shares in Varco International (VRC) were up 3.4 percent, or $1.24, to close at a 52-week high of $37.25.

Steelmaker to Pay More for Brazil Iron Ore
02.28.2005, 03:35 PM

Brazilian mining giant Companhia Vale do Rio Doce SA on Monday announced that China's biggest steelmaker has agreed to pay 71.5 percent more for iron ore supplied in 2005.

CVRD said in a statement that the Shanghai Baosteel Group negotiated the deal on behalf of the Chinese Iron and Steel Association, made up of 13 steelmakers holding contracts to buy 35.4 million tons of iron ore from the Brazilian company this year.

The 71.5 percent hike will take effect April 1, 2005.

The price agreement follows a series of identical deals with Asian steel makers, including Japan's Nippon Steel, South Korea's Posco, and Taiwan's China Steel Corp.

The agreements could strengthen CVRD's hand in ongoing talks with other steelmaking clients, some of whom have bristled at the idea of paying such a steep rise for iron ore, a main ingredient for making steel.

CVRD is one of three largest iron ore miners in the world, along with Anglo-Australian miners BHP Billiton Ltd. and Rio Tinto Plc, and is the biggest exporter of the three.

Titan upgraded to "buy" - update

Friday, March 04, 2005 10:12:28 AM ET
A.G. Edwards & Sons

NEW YORK, March 4 (newratings.com) - Analysts at AG Edwards upgrade Titan Corporation (TTN.NYS) from "hold" to "buy." The 12-month price objective is set to $24.

In a research note published yesterday, the analysts mention that the recent settlements with the DoJ, SEC and DoD, regarding bribery-related issues, would enable the company to bid for the US federal government contracts. Titan's backlog orders and new contract wins this quarter are impressive, the analysts say. AG Edwards expects the company's margins to grow to 8.5% by 2007. The EPS estimate for 2005 has been raised from $0.97 to $1.02.

NEW YORK - With oil up over $50 per barrel again, gurus are stocking up on the companies that produce it. One of their biggest buys was Natchez, Miss.-based oil-and-gas producer and property-owner Callon Petroleum. The top 100 investors at Marketocracy added a full 515% to their holdings of Callon, which has properties mostly in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, and is trading at 7.5 times expected 2005 earnings. But analysts' profit estimates vary widely. Based on high and low estimates, the forward price-to-earnings ratio ranges between 5.2 and 11.8.

The average of the estimates puts the stock's price-to-earnings growth ratio at just 0.35, based on expected annual growth of 32.5% over the next five years. Callon closed recently at $15.58.

Special Offer: Besides energy, Marketocracy's best stock pickers have also been buying technology value stocks like Apple and Silicon Labs. Click here for the full list of oil and gas and technology buys featured in Marketscope.
The M100 increased their holdings of perennial guru favorite PetroKazakhstan (nyse: PKZ - news - people ) by 25%. The Canadian company, which explores for oil in Kazakhstan, trades for less than six times expected 2005 earnings. In addition, its operating margins of 47.5% are far above the industry average of 24.8%. The company is in the top 1% of M100 portfolios.

Gurus also nearly doubled their position in Talisman Energy (nyse: TLM - news - people ), a Canadian company that produces oil and gas in North America, the North Sea, Southeast Asia and Algeria. Talisman is blazing--gaining 26.5% so far in 2005, to close at $34.11 recently. The company trades at 13.8 times expected 2005 earnings.

Another energy angle for the top pickers was Greek oil-shipper Tsakos Energy Navigation (nyse: TNP - news - people ). Tsakos, which currently operates 27 vessels, is up 8.5% in 2005, to $38.85. The company announced a share-buyback program in late January, saying it would buy back $8.25 million worth of shares, or about 1% of the company's market capitalization.

Aside from oil, gurus added to their holdings of pharmaceutical giants Merck (nyse: MRK - news - people ) and Pfizer (nyse: PFE - news - people ), which both benefited from an FDA Advisory Panel ruling last week that Cox-2-inhibitor painkillers, including Merck's recalled Vioxx and Pfizer's Celebrex and Bextra, ought to stay on the market, albeit with stern warnings for customers. Merck added 13% on Friday, to close at $32.61, and Pfizer added 6.9%, to close at $26.80. Gurus have added moderately to their holdings of both drug stocks over the past week.

Special Offer: Upside posted a 39.7% gain in 2004. Rich Moroney's Best Buy portfolio is up more than 280% since inception in 1999, while the S&P 500 has declined almost 10%. Click here for his full list of small- and mid-cap buys.
The M100 also bought Mexican rail- and road-freight company, Grupo TMM (nyse: TMM - news - people ). The company won a court ruling forcing the Mexican government to pay as much as $1.1 billion as a tax rebate, which the company has been seeking since 1997. The reason the amount is so high, on what was originally a $187 million dispute, is that it was ruled that the company could seek damages for inflation and interest on the original amount. The stock closed last week at $3.12.

Another top buy was Toronto-based CryptoLogic (nasdaq: CRYP - news - people ), a maker of gambling software. Gurus doubled their holdings of the company, which has been on a roll since November 2004, adding about 82% in that time. CryptoLogic earned 27 cents per share in the fourth quarter of 2004 on revenue of $17.9 million. The year-before quarter, the company earned 23 cents per share on $13.5 million in revenue.

Finally, gurus took profits on a 44% chunk of their holdings of telecommunications company MCI (nasdaq: MCIP - news - people ) last week, after it was announced that Verizon Communications (nyse: VZ - news - people ) was buying the company for $6.75 billion. Qwest Communications (nyse: Q - news - people ) is still making offers for MCI, but has yet to impress the company's shareholders. While gurus hold small positions in both Verizon and Qwest, they haven't traded either in the last two weeks. MCI closed recently at $22.31, up 10.7% in 2005.
