Atmel And Information Storage Devices Settle Lawsuit

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Specialty computer-chip maker Atmel Corp. (NasdaqNM:ATML - news) and Information Storage Devices Inc. (Nasdaq:ISDI - news) have settled a pending patent infringement lawsuit Atmel had against Information Storage Devices, the companies said on Monday.

``Atmel believes that this agreement meets the objectives of both companies,'' said Julie Mar-Spinola, Atmels' director of litigation and intellectual property.

Atmel had alleged in its lawsuit that Information Storage Devices had violated one of its patents.

``The dismissal of the case not only frees us from litigation burden, but also gives both parties a good basis for more collaborations in the future,'' said Archie Yeh, Information Storage Devices' president and chief executive.

As part of the settlement agreement, San Jose, Calif.-based Atmel granted Information Storage Devices a license relating to programming voltage in an array of memory chips. All other terms of the agreement are confidential, the companies said.

Telefonica agrees to buy Motorola mobile stakes

(Adds background, analyst)
By William Schomberg

MADRID, Oct 10 (Reuters) - Spain's Telefonica said on Tuesday it had agreed to buy stakes in mobile phone service companies owned by Motorola Inc. in five countries for more than $2.6 billion.

Telefonica said it would pay $2.64 billion in cash or $2.74 billion in its own shares for the stakes in five companies in Mexico and one each in Brazil, Israel, the Dominican Republic and Honduras.

Due to list its mobile phone arm thorugh a public share offer later this month, Telefonica is already the dominant phone operator in Latin America, but has until now had no major presence in Mexico, the region's second-biggest economy. "Mexico is the key market. Telefonica has been trying to get in there for years, it's right next to the United States and its economy is in good shape," said Glen Chapman, a telecoms analyst with Madrid brokerage Benito & Monjardin.

The five Mexican companies alone would give Telefonica access to more than a million clients in that country.

Three of them -- Norcel, Cedetel and Bajacel -- are 100 percent owned by Motorola and Chapman said he expected the Spanish company to buy out other shareholders in the other two, Movitel and Portatel.

In Brazil, Telefonica agreed to buy Motorola's 36.3 percent stake in Global Telecom which operates mobile services in the neighbouring states of Santa Catarina and Parana in southern Brazil. Parana adjoins industrial powerhouse state Sao Paulo where Telefonica controls fixed-line operator Telesp .

Telefonica also controls Brazilian mobile operator Tele Sudeste Celular in Brazil's busy southeast.

The Spanish company had previously been linked to Motorola's 50-percent stake in Israeli mobile operator Pelephone. The other half is owned by state phone company Bezeq Israel Telecom .

Telefonica is expected to sell about 10 percent of its mobile arm -- one of the world's 10 biggest wireless operators and worth an estimated 60 billion euros ($53 billion) -- in a public share offer starting later this month.

Telefonica said in a note to security regulators it had the option to choose the form of payment.
