Central banks favour gold amid credit crisis

Saturday, October 04, 2008

And banks elsewhere in the world, most notably in Asia and the Middle East, may even become buyers of gold in an attempt to diversify their reserves away from the U.S. dollar, analysts say.

Under the terms of the Central Bank Gold Agreement, signed in 1999 by key European institutions including Germany's Bundesbank and the European Central Bank and renewed in 2004, members can sell up to 500 tonnes of gold a year.

But in the fourth year of the latest agreement, which ended last Friday, sales fell well short of this ceiling, to just over 357 tonnes.

With banks worried by the outlook for the financial sector, sales could be even lower in the final year of the pact.

“Given the damage done to a lot of other paper assets that were formerly considered secure, there will be greater risk aversion among central banks,” said Philip Klapwijk, executive chairman of metals consultancy GFMS. “This will only boost gold's status within central bank reserves.”

A key reason why central banks want to hold onto gold is the instability of their most common reserve asset, the dollar.

The U.S. currency slipped to record lows against the euro earlier this year, and although it has since taken on a firmer tone, doubts remain over its outlook.

“Gold assets have moved up in value in euro terms whereas dollar assets have fallen considerably,” Mr. Klapwijk said. “There has been a reassessment of gold given developments in last few years.”

Aside from the pressures associated with the current financial crisis, with a number of European central banks now having completed previously announced sales programs, analysts say a dip in selling is to be expected.

Germany's Bundesbank, with the second largest gold reserves in the world after the U.S. Federal Reserve, said this week it would make no gold sales over the next 12 months, aside from a small sale already agreed with its finance ministry.

The Swiss National Bank also said on Monday it had completed the sale of 250 tonnes of gold it announced last June, and had no plans for further sales.

The correction in the gold price from the all-time high of $1,030.80 (U.S.) an ounce it hit in March is also relieving some of the pressure on banks to sell gold to rebalance their reserves.

“One reason people had been selling was because the gold price had risen and therefore the reserve value, relative to foreign exchange, had increased,” said RBS Global Banking & Markets commodity strategist Nick Moore.

“There was some selling pressure in order to rebalance reserves back to levels people were comfortable with.

“The fall in the gold price from over $1,000 puts us in a situation where the percentage of gold as a proportion of banks' reserves will be lower, so that will take some pressure off for rebalancing,” he added.

CBGA signatories aside, some central banks are more likely to be buyers than sellers of gold as the outlook for financial markets and the dollar stays rocky, analysts say.

These purchases are most likely to come from Asian and Middle Eastern central banks looking to diversify their dollar assets into gold than their European counterparts.

“Central banks flush with dollars in Asia and the Middle East may try to diversify into gold,” said Calyon metals analyst Robin Bhar. “The argument in favour of that may have been made stronger by recent events, which may encourage more diversification away from depreciating currencies.”

Die Reserven wachsen also immer weiter.

EXCLUSIVE-Gold Fields CEO sees global gold supply tighter

AFX

CAJAMARCA, Peru, Oct 3 (Reuters) - Global gold supply will likely contract as the financial crisis in the United States saps funds away from planned mining projects, Nick Holland, the chief executive of Gold Fields said on Friday.

The lead of the world's fourth-largest gold producer, based in South Africa, was in Peru to inaugurate the company's Cerro Corona mine.

'Some of the juniors and intermediate companies are not going to be able to develop their projects. And I think what this means is that mine supply in gold is probably going to decline more than what people realize,' Holland told Reuters.

He said miners will need to look for funding in less-conventional emerging markets, such as Peru or South Africa.

'The funding market is drying up rapidly,' he said. 'I think lending in traditional markets is not going to be the way to go in the future.'

He said miners should look for financing in emerging markets where they have mines.

'I would much rather look to the kind of markets that we're developing in to raise finance. Forget some of the traditional markets because they're drying up anyway, and look at the markets in which you're operating,' he said.

'What better place to raise money but in a burgeoning economy like Peru,' he asked.

The company's new mine is expected to last at least 15 years. It invested over $550 million so far and plans to invest another $250 million over the life of the mine.

'At full capacity, this mine will get to 375,000 ounces of gold equivalent ... We expect to achieve that on an annualized basis by March of next year,' he said.

UPDATE 1-US Mint halts some American Eagle coin production

Tue Oct 7, 2008 10:14am EDT(Adds details, background, gold price)By Frank TangNEW YORK, Oct 7 (Reuters) - Unprecedented demand for precious metals and volatile markets forced the U.S. Mint to cease production for the half-ounce and quarter-ounce popular American Eagle gold coins for the rest of this year and to supply other bullion coins on an allocation basis."Due to the extreme fluctuating market conditions for 2008, as well as current market conditions, gold and silver demand is unprecedented and the demand for platinum is unusually high," the U.S. Mint said Monday in a memorandum to its authorized coin dealers."The U.S. Mint has worked diligently to attempt to meet demand, however, blank supplies are very limited and it is necessary for the U.S. Mint to focus remaining bullion production primarily on American Eagle Gold one-ounce and Silver one-ounce coins," the Mint said. The Mint said it would continue to supply one-ounce American Eagle gold coins and one-ounce American Eagle silver coins on an allocation basis to coin dealers. For half-ounce and quarter-ounce American Eagles, the Mint said that inventory was depleted last week and no more coins would be produced for the rest of 2008.In addition, the Mint said it would produce 1-10th ounce Eagles based on current coin blank supplies, but would cease production for the rest of this year once the remaining inventory was depleted.Produced from gold mined in the United States, the 22-karat American Eagles have been novel items among collectors and investors since their introduction in 1986. Each coin has a face value of $50 but it is sold by authorized dealers at a premium to the price of gold.AMERICAN BUFFALO, AMERICAN EAGLE PLATINUMThe Mint said it would continue to supply 24-karat American Buffalo one-ounce gold coins based on current blank supplies, but would halt production once the remaining inventory was out.The Mint had suspended sales of the Buffalos in late September due to strong demand and inventory depletion.Similarly, the Mint said that all denominations for American Eagle platinum bullion coins were depleted last week, and it would halt production for the rest of the year once the remaining inventory was depleted.Coin dealers from the United States to Canada have recently reported a surge in buying of bullion coins.Gold has soared as much as $200 in the last 30 days as panic investors flocked to gold as a worsening global financial crisis prompted people to seek a safe haven.Spot gold <XAU=> traded at about $884 an ounce on Tuesday, while the gold contract for December delivery GCZ8 on the COMEX division of the New York Stock Exchange was at $886 an ounce.
