Thin Film Si Solar Cells to Be Produced in India
Feb 5, 2008 17:40

Moser Baer India Ltd of India has its optical disc and solar cell manufacturing center in Greater Noida on the outskirts of New Deli.

Other companies including LG Electronics of Korea and Franco-Italian STMicroelectronics also have their manufacturing facilities around it. Moser Baer's manufacturing center is currently drawing interest from solar cell-related manufacturers across the world.

Moser Baer's subsidiary Moser Baer Photo Voltaic Ltd is currently advancing preparation to manufacture a new thin film Si solar module. This solar module's distinctive feature is the adoption of a huge glass substrate that measures 2.2 x 2.6m. Its manufacturing equipment is a glass-to-module total production line dubbed "SunFab," which Applied Materials Inc (AMAT) is promoting.

Moser Baer will be the first external company that AMAT has ever supplied its SunFab to. The new manufacturing center's success or failure is being closely watched not only by global solar cell-related manufacturers, but also by firms that are considering entering the market.

That is because the glass-to-module production line lowers hurdles to entering the market, while the large substrate also slashes solar cell manufacturing cost.

If Moser Baer succeeds in the production, it will result in major changes in the relationships between solar cell manufacturers.

[..]

Particularly conspicuous was the huge autoclave, in addition to the PECVD equipment. The company had already set up and powered the PECVD equipment, which holds the key to the SunFab's success or failure. It was planning to test the glass substrate conveyor in several days, Moser Baer said.

Moser Baer plans 600 MW Thin Film PV capacity with an estimated investment of
over $ 1.5 bn

Saturday, February 09, 2008

Saturday, February 09, 2008 : Moser Baer India Limited today announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, PV Technologies India Limited, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a leading global equipment supplier to secure supply of critical equipment for a 565 MW phased expansion of its Thin Film photovoltaic modules manufacturing capacity, which together with the current project capacity of 40 MW will take the total manufacturing capacity to over 600 MW by 2010.

Ravi Khanna, CEO, PV said, “Leaders in the PV industry will continue to emerge on the strengths of rapid scale up and technology differentiation. We see an increasingly significant role for Thin Film technologies in meeting peaking power requirements and now aim to be a significant player in this arena.”

Thin film solar modules are ideal for energy farms, rural applications and building integrated Photovoltaic markets. Photovoltaic modules based on large area Thin Film technology provide a path to cost parity between solar generation and grid power. According to market estimates, the Thin Film based solar modules will see large emerging applications and a robust demand that, according to industry estimates is expected to grow ten fold; from 250 MW currently to 2GW with a market size of $5 bn by 2010.

As part of its Masdar Initiative, the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Co. is significantly expanding its investment in solar energy by contracting with Applied Materials to purchase three SunFab(TM) Thin Film Lines for producing solar modules. With an optional tandem junction upgrade, these SunFab lines are expected to annually produce modules with a targeted capacity of up to 210 megawatts (MW), or enough energy to power approximately 70,000 homes.

Moser Baer’s thin film line ready for production of ultra-large solar modules
January 21, 2009

   * Final Acceptance Test certification awarded for Applied Materials’ SunFab™ Thin Film Line
   * 40MW capacity line is the largest thin film solar line in India

New Delhi/Santa Clara (CA), January 21, 2009: Moser Baer, the global technology company, today announced that its photovoltaic subsidiary is ready for production of thin film photovoltaic modules at its manufacturing plant in Greater Noida. This follows final acceptance test (FAT) certification of Moser Baer Photovoltaic’s SunFab™ Thin Film Line supplied by Applied Materials, Inc., the California-based nanomanufacturing technology solutions provider. The certification verifies that the SunFab line has met all manufacturing, module efficiency and yield specifications.

This is a major milestone for both Moser Baer and Applied Materials representing the start of production of thin film modules by Moser Baer, which was Applied’s first SunFab customer. The 40MW capacity line is the largest thin film solar line in India. This single junction SunFab line has demonstrated the highest production capacity to date for manufacturing the world’s largest (2.2m x 2.6m) solar modules.
