Universal Detection Technology Emphasizes Growing Threat of Chemical and Biological Attacks in the United States and Abroad

Universal Detection Technology (www.udetection.com) (OTCBB: UNDT), a developer of early-warning monitoring technologies that protect against biological, chemical, and radiological weapons, believes that the United States needs to update its chemical and biological defense efforts in order to deal with the evolving and growing threat of an attack on the US soil with such agents.
A recent report published by the RAND Corporation, states that "given the inherent secrecy with which states and other actors will conduct [chemical and biological] CB agent development, adversary programs could acquire new CB agents years before US defense planners recognize those agents. After the US intelligence community recognizes those CB agents as threats, the United States will probably need many more years to establish a comprehensive defense against them. Such gaps in CB defense capabilities pose a potentially serious risk to US military operations."
Rogue nations and terrorist groups have developed new and more sophisticated scientific capabilities and dual-use manufacturing sectors have proliferated, increasing the threat of development of lethal chemical or biological agents. The Anthrax attacks of 2001 were one incident which showed how just a few grams of weaponized anthrax sent through the postal system caused such havoc. "In the coming decades, these factors will likely increase the probability that the United States will face 'unknown' CB threats against which existing defenses are inadequate even for US military personnel," the report said.
According to a report by NBC New York, "Security officials are warning the leaders of major Wall Street banks that Al Qaeda terrorists in Yemen may be trying to plan attacks against those financial institutions or their leading executives." Intelligence analysts have suggested they have a general but growing concern that operatives in Yemen may again try to send package bombs of biological and chemical agents through the mail to Wall Street bankers. The latest "Inspire" issue also made reference to trying to use anthrax in an attack, officials said.
"As the world witnesses unrest in some very volatile regions in the Middle East and North Africa, there is a growing concern that weapons of mass destruction can be acquired by rogue regimes and terrorists and be used against the United States and its allies. Universal Detection Technology has grown its product portfolio to address all aspects of CBRNE threats with fast acting detection of such threats," said Jacques Tizabi, CEO of Universal Detection Technology. "We recently added Tularemia to the list of agents that our detection kits can rapidly identify in a sample. We plan to add more detection capabilities for agents such as Brucella and Pox soon as we anticipate the types of agents that might be utilized by terrorists," added Tizabi.

Workers evacuate stricken nuclear plant
Setback as Japan struggles to contain spiraling nuclear crisis
FUKUSHIMA, Japan — Workers at a quake-damaged atomic power plant suspended operations and evacuated Wednesday after a surge in radiation made it too dangerous to remain there, dealing a setback to Japan’s frantic efforts to stem a nuclear crisis.
"All the workers there have suspended their operations. We have urged them to evacuate, and they have," Japan's chief cabinet secretary, Yukio Edano said, according to a translation by NHK television.
Edano said that a surge in radiation Wednesday morning meant workers were unable to continue even minimal efforts at the stricken nuclear plant.
About 45 minutes later, though, radiation levels near the plant came back down, he said. It's possible that evaporation from reactor No. 3 may have caused the temporary surge, Edano said, although that can't be immediately confirmed. The cabinet secretary added that there was no need to broaden the overall evacuation radius around the nuclear complex......more vis link.
Radiation Detection
Universal Detection Technology’s radiation detection equipment represents the new generation of gamma, gamma/neutron radiation detectors and electronic dosimeters.
Many of these sensitive pocket-sized devices are designed to detect, locate and quantify any radioactive materials as Special Nuclear Materials or as Radiological Dispersal Devices (RDD) in a very short time. A select number of these devices have the capacity to transmit the measurement and the spectrum on request,
UNDT’s radiation equipment has been designed for first responders, law enforcement, customs inspectors and for personnel and site security in critical infrastructures.

As for Universal Detection Technology, this $1 million company makes anti-bioterrorism devices, including [drum roll please] radiation-detecting devices.... which are coming in handy now, and will for a while. That in itself isn't a reason to own a stock, but it sure doesn't hurt. Still, with sales under $20K for the last year (yes, you read that right), it doesn't seem possible that the company could generate enough sales to make a meaningful dent in that P/S ratio of 214 (never even mind the lack of profits). The radiation story in the meantime, though, could make things hot for a week here.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported yesterday that radioactivity has been released directly into the atmosphere from the Unit 4 reactor at Japan's Fukushima Daiichi plant. The agency quoted Japanese authorities as saying: "The spent fuel storage pond at the Unit 4 reactor of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant is on fire and radioactivity is being released directly into the atmosphere." Elevated radiation levels have been detected in as far south as Tokyo.
"In light of the nuclear disaster in Japan and radiation release, we are working closely with the US Department of Commerce to market our Radiological Detection Equipment in Japan," said Mr. Jacques Tizabi, UNDT's Chairman and CEO. "We hope to get our products into first responders' hands in Japan as soon as possible to help in their daunting task of containing radiation from the damaged reactors," he added.
