FRIDAY, DECEMBER 31
AUSTRALIA - Stock and futures exchanges closed, currency
market open. Half-day holiday in New South Wales, which will
affect Sydney, the country's largest market. Settlement of
trades will still occur. The Australian Financial Markets
Association has declared this a "good business day", when the
payments system is open in Sydney, but has said it is a
"non-market making day", which means any conventions conferring
obligations on participants to make two-way prices are suspended
for the day.
BANGLADESH - Market and bank holiday.
CHINA - Bank holiday.
HONG KONG - Market holiday and bank holiday to allow banks
enough time to prepare for the new millennium.
INDIA - National Stock Exchange and Bombay Stock Exchange
closed to comply with millennium arrangements announced by
markets regulator SEBI. Both exchanges resume trading January 3.
INDONESIA - Stock markets closed.
JAPAN - Market and public holiday.
MALAYSIA - Market holiday to prepare for the millennium
change and for New Year's Eve.
