Hong Kong's Cheung Kong Infrastructure inks power plant deals in China UPDATE

Cheung Kong Infrastructure Holdings Ltd (CKI) said it has signed an agreement to build two new coal-fired power plants in Zhuhai which will have total installed capacity of 2,000 megawatts.

It said the two new power plants, which represent the second phase development of CKI's Jinwan joint venture in Zhuhai, will require total investment of 6.8 bln yuan.

Phase 2 of the Jinwan project will have annual electricity output of over 11 bln kilowatt hours.

Construction will start as soon as all government approvals have been obtained, it said, adding that operations are expected to start in 2010.

Two units in the Jinwan power project were commissioned earlier this year.

CKI holds a 45 pct interest in the Jinwan power venture while Guangdong Yudean Group Co Ltd and the Electric Development Group Co Ltd of Zhuhai Special Economic Zone hold the remainder.

At 11.12 am, Cheung Kong Infrastructure shares were trading up 1.55 hkd or 5.31 pct at 30.75.
