Hallo Leute,
Was haltet Ihr davon ?

HONG KONG — Alibaba.com's trading debut on Tuesday for its record-breaking $1.49-billion (U.S.) IPO may lose some of its fizz after Hong Kong stocks lost 5 per cent on Monday in their sharpest drop since September 2001.

“Because of the market situation, there is bound to be some profit-taking from short-term gains,” said Andrew To, sales director at Tai Fook Securities.

“The market is extremely volatile,” he added.

Still, Alibaba.com shares rose as much as 84 per cent on a grey market trading platform run by Phillip Securities after Monday's Hong Kong close. Alibaba.com's first day performance is expected to depend in part on the performance of the U.S. markets overnight.

On Monday afternoon, To said he cut his first-day forecast gain for Alibaba.com shares to 30-50 per cent from an earlier target of 50-80 per cent. Hong Kong shares plunged after Beijing fuelled expectations of further delays in a scheme to allow mainland Chinese investors to buy Hong Kong stocks.......Investors crowded into the Alibaba.com IPO even though its offering price values the company at 106.3 times forecast 2007 earnings — a steep premium to most of its peers.

By comparison, Baidu.com Inc. trades at 170 times 2007 forecast earnings, while Google Inc. trades at 46 times and eBay Inc. at 23.5 times. ........

Investor interest was only whetted by the soaring price, further driving up the stock to HK$35.75 ($4.58) at midday. With its shares trading at 281.5 times its 2007 earnings per share, Alibaba is even pricier than Google , whose shares have recently sold at a price-to-earnings multiple of 58.8 .After the initial run-up in its shares, the market value of Alibaba stood at 146 times earnings based on its projections for 2008......
David Wei, CEO and the No. 2 man at Alibaba, disclosed earlier that the company is exploring opportunities in Taiwan, Hong Kong, India and Japan. Alibaba views Hong Kong and Taiwan as the easiest and quickest markets in which to expand. The e-commerce company is in talks with Taiwan's Hon Hai Precision Industry  , which holds 0.3% of Alibaba.com through its subsidiary Foxconn (Far East), about possible cooperation.Meanwhile, the business portal has already begun trial Japanese-language services and is looking forward to cooperation with its major shareholders Yahoo  and Softbank , which respectively own 39% and 29% of Alibaba Group, the parent company of Alibaba.com.

Nov. 7 (Bloomberg) -- Alibaba.com Ltd.'s valuation is stratospheric even by the standards of Hong Kong, where shares of the Internet company started trading yesterday, or mainland China, where its majority owner is based. The price-to-sales ratio for Alibaba.com, China's most popular Web site for businesses to buy and sell goods, is so high that someone might assume it's based on earnings rather than revenue.Alibaba.com closed at 111 times sales for the 12 months ended in June, according to calculations based on data in the initial public offering prospectus. The company's market value was equivalent to $25.7 billion, dwarfing its 1.73 billion yuan ($232 million) in revenue for the period.

Only one of the 201 stocks in Hong Kong's Hang Seng Composite Index has a higher ratio, data compiled by Bloomberg showed. And that company, Orient Resources Group Ltd., is turning itself into an energy producer, from a real-estate developer.

China's CSI 300 Index, a benchmark for one of the world's most costly stock markets, doesn't have a single member trading at a larger multiple. Cofco Property (Group) Co., a Shenzhen- based developer and investment company, comes the closest at 68.2 times revenue.

Alibaba.com, incorporated in the Cayman Islands and run from Hangzhou, China, is an even more costly stock when compared with Yahoo! Inc. and Softbank Corp. -- the two biggest investors in Alibaba.com Corp., the confusingly named parent company.

Investor Ratios

Yahoo, the owner of the most-visited U.S. Web site, trades at only six times sales. The Sunnyvale, California-based company has a 39 percent stake in Alibaba.com Corp., which bought its Chinese business two years ago, according to the prospectus. Yahoo also purchased about 7 percent of the unit's stock in connection with the IPO.

Softbank, a mobile-phone company that started out as an Internet investor, holds 29.3 percent of Alibaba.com Corp.'s shares. The Tokyo-based company's stock price is roughly the same as its revenue per share.

Now let's look at price-earnings ratios. Alibaba.com Ltd.'s closing price of HK$39.50 yesterday amounted to 422 times profit for the 12 months ended in June, according to the prospectus. The company has forecast a minimum profit of 622 million yuan for this year, and the ratio derived from that estimate is 308.

These numbers are just as exceptional as the price-to-sales figure for Hong Kong-listed companies. Orient Resources is the only stock that's more expensive in the Hang Seng Composite.  Go through the CSI 300, and it's possible to find multiple stocks with higher P/Es. Yantai Dongfang Electronics Information Industry Co., a maker of electrical equipment, and China Union Holdings Ltd., a producer of textiles, both have ratios that exceed 1,000.

Both these companies only have yuan-denominated A shares, largely off limits to overseas investors. Alibaba.com doesn't have a comparable restriction. It's available to anyone who doesn't mind overpaying for a stock.
