Al-Zarqawi aide captured, says American military

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Total U.S. troop casualties in the Iraq war passed 1,600 Sunday, according to a CNN count, when two soldiers were killed near Khaldiya and a third died in Samarra.
All three were killed by roadside bombs, the U.S. military said.
Two soldiers assigned to a Marine combat team were killed during operations near Khaldiya, just east of Ramadi, which is 60 miles west of Baghdad, the Marines said. Officials did not give the time of the incident.
In Samarra, about 75 miles north of the capital, one soldier was killed and another wounded at about 2:30 p.m. (6:30 a.m. ET), the military said.
U.S. forces also said they killed a suspected terrorist and injured another during a patrol in western Iraq.
A day earlier, three Marines and a sailor were killed during a battle with insurgents who were using a Haditha hospital to attack U.S. forces, the military said.
Marines responding to small arms fire near Haditha Dam were attacked by a suicide car bomber who hit a nearby building, officials with the Marines said. The building was destroyed, and the adjacent hospital caught fire.
Marines searching the hospital found that windows had been fortified. "A number of insurgents" were also killed, the Marines said. Haditha is about 150 miles west of Baghdad.
Also Saturday, a makeshift bomb killed a Marine during combat in al-Karma, about 30 miles west of Baghdad in Anbar province.
To date, 1,601 American forces have been killed since the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in March 2003. In all, 1,780 coalition forces -- not counting Iraqi forces -- have been killed.

According to news reports compiled by Pat Kniesler of the Web site iCasualties.org, more than 2,000 Iraqi soldiers, police and guardsmen have been killed since U.S.-led troops began working with Iraqis to build a security force under the Coalition Provisional Authority in 2003.
Also Sunday, two attacks in northern Iraq left four civilians dead, the U.S. military said.
Three Iraqi civilians were found shot to death outside their vehicle in western Mosul. Another civilian was killed when a roadside bomb exploded near an Iraqi army patrol in the eastern part of the city.
Another Iraqi civilian died Saturday in an apparent insurgent attack near the restive city of Tal Afar, the U.S. military said.
The number of Iraqi civilians killed in the war remains unclear. Data compiled by the Web site iraqbodycount.org suggests that between 21,000 and 25,000 civilians have been confirmed killed.
Aide's 'intelligence documents' found
The U.S. military said Sunday that an aide to terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi had been captured by Iraqi security forces in Baghdad.
U.S. forces identified him as Ammar al-Zubaydi, also known as Abu Abbas.
Al-Zubaydi was captured Thursday, the military said. He was responsible for many recent suicide car bombings and an attack on Abu Ghraib prison in April that wounded U.S. troops and detainees at the facility, the military said. (Full story)
The military said al-Zubaydi was responsible for a string of car bombs in the Baghdad area on April 29. On that day, 12 explosions were reported in eight areas of the capital within a matter of hours.
Twenty-three Iraqi security troops died across the city and 31 others were wounded, authorities said. At least one civilian died and dozens more were wounded. (Full story)
Al-Zubaydi is not the same Abu Abbas who masterminded the terrorist hijacking of the Italian cruise ship Achille Lauro in 1985. That man, leader of the Palestine Liberation Front, was captured in Iraq in the early days of the war and died in custody.
Iraqi officials said "intelligence documents" seized at al-Zubaydi's home indicated he was preparing to assassinate a senior government official, who the officials did not identify.
Al-Zubaydi confessed to supporting another suspected al-Zarqawi aide, Abu Omar al-Kurdi, captured in December, Iraqi officials said.
The officials released a statement Sunday saying al-Zubaydi also confessed to stealing 400 rockets and 720 cases of explosives from weaponry warehouses in Yusifiya in 2003.
A U.S. military statement said he told the Iraqis he gave al-Kurdi access to the stolen explosives, which he stockpiled on and near a farm in Yusifiya. Al-Kurdi used them for car bombs, the military said.
Tip leads to capture of 54 insurgents
Another al-Zarqawi associate -- captured April 26 -- helped U.S. and Iraqi forces kill six insurgents Sunday and capture another 54 in western Iraq near the Syrian border, the U.S. military said.
The anti-insurgent operation took place near the Rawa region in the Anbar province north of Qaim, the military said. The region is a base for rebel attacks in Baghdad and Falluja.
Information provided by al-Zarqawi associate Ghassan Muhammad Amin Husayn al-Rawi helped the operation, according to the military.
During the mission, U.S. and Iraqi "forces also destroyed car bombs, bomb-making material and two buildings that contained large weapons caches," the military said.
Before his capture, al-Rawi "facilitated movement and meetings for al-Zarqawi in the Rawa region, facilitated movement of foreign fighters, and was responsible for terrorist activity resulting in the murder of innocent Iraqis," according to Saturday's announcement of his capture by the military.
Word of the raid came a day after U.S. soldiers captured 33 suspected terrorists, including two men described as "high value targets" in the Baghdad area, the U.S. military said.
Iraqi Cabinet jobs filled
The Iraqi National Assembly approved six names Sunday to fill vacant Cabinet positions, including ministers for defense and oil.
Four of the six posts went to Sunni Arabs -- an effort by the Shiite and Kurd-dominated transitional government to give a larger voice to the Sunni minority.
The ministries of defense, industry and human rights are to be headed by Sunnis, and a newly named deputy prime minister is a Sunni.
The defense minister will be Sadun al-Dulaimi, a Sunni. The Oil Ministry will be headed by a Shiite, Ibrahim Bahrululum.
Hashem al-Shibli, a Sunni who was tapped to be the minister of human rights, refused the post, saying he did not believe Cabinet positions should be allocated based on ethnic or religious affiliation.
Last month, transitional Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari announced all 36 Cabinet positions in the new government -- some of them temporary. The new Cabinet members were sworn in one by one last Tuesday -- altogether 28. (Cabinet list)
The transitional government's main goal is to write a constitution that must be put before voters in a referendum this year.
Other developments
CTU Consulting Management said two of its employees were among 22 people killed in a Baghdad suicide bombing on Saturday: Todd James Venetta of White Hall, Arkansas, and Brandon James Thomas of Salt Lake City, Utah. Venetta was a veteran of the U.S. Marines who had previously served as a firefighter and paramedic in Russellville, Arkansas, the company said. Thomas, 27, was scheduled to return to the United States at the end of this month to prepare for deployment in Iraq with his Utah National Guard unit, said his mother, Carol Young. (More on attack)
A senior official with Iraq's Transportation Ministry, Zawba' Al-Ma'ini, was assassinated Sunday along with his driver as they left al-Ma'ini's home in Dora, on the northwest outskirts of Baghdad, Iraqi police said.

Im Kampf gegen die Aufständischen im Irak ändern die USA Zeitungsberichten zufolge ihre Taktik: Statt Saddam-Anhänger will das US-Militär nun verstärkt ausländische Terroristen ins Visier nehmen.
WASHINGTON. Von ausländischen und irakischen Extremisten könnte mittlerweile eine größere Bedrohung ausgehen als von Unterstützern und Mitgliedern der gestürzten Regierung, berichtete die „Washington Post“ unter Berufung auf Vertreter des US-Militärs. Das US-Verteidigungsministerium hatte bisher gesagt, die Anschläge im Irak würden vor allem von Anhängern des früheren Diktators verübt.
Die neue Strategie sei eine Reaktion auf die zunehmende Gewalt im Irak, berichtete die „Washington Post“. Die Veränderung sei jedoch vorläufig und gehe eher auf bruchstückhaften Informationen und Intuition als auf klare Beweise zurück. Im Nordwesten des Iraks kontrollierten US-Soldaten verstärkt die Grenzen zu Syrien. Zudem würden erhöhte Anstrengungen unternommen, um die Hersteller von Bomben und Drahtzieher von Selbstmordanschlägen zu fassen, berichtete die Zeitung.
Laut Statistiken des US-Militärs sei die Zahl der täglichen Anschläge im Irak von 30 bis 40 pro Tag im Februar auf durchschnittlich 70 Anschläge pro Tag im März angestiegen, hieß es in dem Artikel. Am Montag wurden nach Polizeiangaben bei einem weiteren Selbstmordanschlag auf einen Polizeikontrollpunkt in der Hauptstadt Bagdad mindestens drei Menschen getötet und acht verletzt.

Sieben Tage lang Bombardements und Angriffe im Westen des Irak.
Die USA haben am Samstag ihre einwöchige Offensive im Westirak beendet. Wie der US-Nachrichtensender CNN unter Berufung auf das Militär berichtet, wurden dabei 125 Aufständische und neun Marineinfanteristen getötet.
Es seien bei der Operation "Matador" außerdem 40 US-Soldaten verletzt und 39 Aufständische gefangen genommen worden, die für die Geheimdienst wichtige Informationen liefern könnten.
"Ruhezonen" für Rebellen zerstört
Laut CNN wurden die Verkehrsverbindungen unterbrochen, über die Aufständische aus Syrien in den Irak eindringen konnten. Auch seien Rückzugsgebiete und Ruhezonen der Rebellen zerstört worden.
Schwierige Lage für Zivilisten
Die Lage für die Bevölkerung war während der siebentägigen Bombardierungen durch das US-Militär immer kritischer geworden. Amerikanische Kampfflugzeuge und Hubschrauber griffen am Samstag erneut mutmaßliche Stellungen der Aufständischen nahe der Stadt el Kaim an der syrischen Grenze an, berichteten Augenzeugen.
Bei einem Selbstmordattentat in der irakischen Hauptstadt Bagdad starben am Samstag mindestens vier Menschen, Dutzende wurden verletzt. Zunächst war von bis zu zehn Toten die Rede gewesen.
Zahlreiche neue Anschläge
In Doha südlich von Bagdad wurden drei Zivilisten bei einem Sprengstoffanschlag getötet. Bei einem Angriff Aufständischer auf einen irakisch-amerikanischen Kontrollposten westlich von Bagdad starben nach Angaben eines Krankenhaussprechers zwei Soldaten.
In der Nähe des Bagdader Flughafens erschossen amerikanische Soldaten einen Autofahrer, der bei einer Straßensperre nicht rechtzeitig stoppte.
Ausnahmezustand verlängert
Die irakische Regierung verlängerte am Freitag den Ausnahmezustand für weitere 30 Tage. Der bereits im November 2004 in Kraft getretene Ausnahmezustand schränkt die Bewegungsfreiheit der Bürger ein, ermöglicht die Verhängung von Ausgangssperren und erweitert die Befugnisse der Sicherheitskräfte.

Einer der meistgesuchten Terroristen der Welt, der Jordanier Abu Mussab el Sarkawi, ist offenbar schwer verwundet worden.
Der Verbündete von El-Kaida-Chef Osama bin Laden sei in der vergangenen Woche in einem Krankenhaus in der westirakischen Stadt Ramadi behandelt worden, berichtete die "Sunday Times" unter Berufung auf einen irakischen Reporter, der mit dem behandelnden Arzt gesprochen habe.
Die USA haben ein Kopfgeld von 25 Mio. Dollar (rund 19 Mio. Euro) auf Sarkawi ausgesetzt.
Stark geblutet
Als Sarkawi am vergangenen Mittwoch in das Krankenhaus kam, habe er stark geblutet. Der Arzt habe den Patienten nach eigenen Angaben von Fotos gekannt, die er im Fernsehen gesehen hatte.
Die "Sunday Times" berichtete weiter, die Angaben des Arztes seien von einem ranghohen Anführer der Aufständischen, der sich in Ramadi aufhielt, bestätigt worden.
Der Arzt wollte dem Bericht zufolge nichts über die Art der Verwundung sagen. Nach der Behandlung habe er den Patienten angewiesen, weiter im Krankenhaus zu bleiben und ihm mitgeteilt, dass er sich registrieren lassen müsse.
"Sehr nervös"
Darauf sei dieser "sehr nervös und unruhig" geworden und habe gesagt, er werde nicht bleiben. Seine Begleiter hätten höflich gefragt, ob sie eine Liste der notwendigen Medikamente erhalten könnten.
Maschinengewehre und Dollarbündel
Der Arzt begleitete nach eigenen Angaben Sarkawi, den er anhand von TV-Fotos wieder erkannt hatte, zu dessen Auto, um ihn zum Verbleib im Spital zu überreden. Im Auto habe er dann Maschinengewehre gesehen. Sarkawis Begleiter hätten ihm gedroht, ihn zu töten, sollte er irgendjemandem von der Begegnung erzählen.
Dann drückten sie dem Arzt ein Bündel Dollarscheine in die Hand.
Erfolg von US-Offensive?
Der Mediziner sei inzwischen von der US-Armee verhört worden, berichtete das Blatt unter Berufung auf Bewohner von Ramadi. US-Truppen waren in den vergangenen Tagen in einer groß angelegten Militäraktion im Westen des Irak gegen Anhänger von Sarkawi vorgegangen.
Nur knapp entkommen
Die Schlinge um bin Ladens "Stellvertreter" im Irak zieht sich offenbar immer mehr zusammen: Erst vor wenigen Wochen hatte die US-Militärführung bestätigt, dass der Topterrorist nur knapp den amerikanischen Truppen entkommen konnte.
Laut Medienberichten war Sarkawi einer US-Spezialeinheit bei einer Verfolgungsjagd Ende Februar nur um Haaresbreite entwischt.

US-Außenministerin Condoleezza Rice ist unterdessen am Sonntag zu einem Überraschungsbesuch in der nordirakischen Stadt Arbil (Erbil) eingetroffen. Mit ihrem Besuch wollte sie auch die erst seit kurzem amtierende irakische Regierung unterstützen.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Two U.S. soldiers riding in a convoy were killed when gunmen in another vehicle shot them in central Baghdad, the U.S. military said.
The attack occurred Thursday evening.
Another U.S. soldier was killed in an accident caused when a driver swerved to avoid a roadside bomb explosion north of Baghdad early Friday, the U.S. military said.
The soldier, who was walking, was hit by the swerving vehicle, the military said.
The 1st Corps Support Command Soldier was on a "combat logistic patrol" north of Taji, which is about 18 miles (30 kilometers) north of Baghdad at about midnight, the military said.
The soldier, whose name has not yet been released, was pronounced dead at a nearby medical facility, the military said.
This latest fatalities bring the total number of U.S. military deaths in the war to 1,630.
In violence earlier Thursday, an aide to Iraq's most powerful Shiite cleric was shot to death in Baghdad, police said, the second of his aides killed this week.
The attack was part of an upsurge in violence since the largely Shiite transitional government came to power.
Many of the targets have been Shiites and Kurds. Authorities believe the insurgents are mainly Sunni Arabs.
Sayid Mohammed al-Allaf, an aide to Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, was shot to death in Sadr City, a largely Shiite neighborhood of northeast Baghdad, Iraqi police said.
The other al-Sistani aide shot this week was Sheikh Qasim al-Ghiri. He and his nephew were killed in a drive-by shooting early Sunday in eastern Baghdad, where there is a large Shiite presence.
Meanwhile, Iran's foreign minister, Kamal Kharrazi, who held meetings earlier this week with Iraqi government officials, traveled Thursday to Najaf to meet with al-Sistani, who was born in Iran.
Al-Allaf's assassination followed Wednesday's call by the Association of Muslim Scholars and the Iraqi Islamic Party to close Sunni mosques from Saturday dawn prayers until Tuesday dawn prayers to protest the treatment of Sunnis.
According to the GlobalSecurity.org Web site, the association was created after the fall of Saddam Hussein and his largely Sunni government. It is the highest Sunni authority in Iraq.
The association's statement says the Shiite-dominated transitional government disregards the Sunni community's rights and has violated "mosques, [the] holy Quran and private homes; in addition to the arrest, torture and assassination of scholars and thousands of youth and worshippers without proper trial, along with a deliberate marring of the reputation of Sunnis through official and non-official media."
The statement demands the end of the alleged government practices, threatening a "stricter" response if it does not.
On Monday, Iraq Defense Minister Sadoun al-Dulaimi ordered the Iraqi army to stop raids on mosques and churches.
"We have ordered a ministerial order to all units," said al-Dulaimi, who expressed concern about harming civilians.
Insurgents have used mosques to stage attacks and to hide guns and explosives.
Sunnis constitute a small portion of the 275-member transitional National Assembly. Many Sunnis stayed away from the January 30 elections that chose representatives to the assembly.
One of the Sunni Arab lawmakers escaped an assassination attempt Thursday in which nine others died, police said. The U.S. military said eight people were killed in violence surrounding the incident.
Gunmen fired at the car of Sheikh Fawaz al-Jarba as it approached his house in the northern city of Mosul. Al-Jarba's driver was killed, but his bodyguards shot dead one of the attackers.
Mosul police said later they recovered seven other bodies, identifying them as family and personnel.
Insurgents "began firing at a helicopter that had been called to investigate. The helicopter returned fire, injuring three," a coalition news release said.
Also Thursday, an official from Iraq's Oil Ministry, Ali Maneed, and a professor at Baghdad University, Dr. Qasim Mohammed Al-Umari, were gunned down in a separate incidents in Baghdad, police said.
Al-Umari was the son of an ex-Sunni imam of a mosque in the eastern neighborhood of Ur.
Other developments
The U.S. Army has scheduled another hearing for May 24 for Pfc. Lynndie England, the first step in restarting the process in her court-martial. A military judge declared a mistrial in the England case May 4 and threw out her guilty plea in connection with her role in the Abu Ghraib prison scandal. She is charged with seven criminal counts: two of conspiracy, four of abusing detainees and one of committing an indecent act. (Full story)
U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Robert Zoellick arrived in Baghdad Thursday for meetings with top Iraqi officials, U.S. officials said. His first meeting was with Hachem al-Hassani, speaker of the Iraq's transitional National Assembly. Zoellick was scheduled to meet Thursday afternoon with interim Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari, U.S. Embassy officials said, as well as other U.S. and Iraqi officials.
A suicide car bomb killed an Iraqi army soldier and wounded nine others, including one civilian, in southern Baghdad on Thursday, police said. The bomb exploded at an Iraqi army checkpoint in the southern Baghdad outskirts of Hor Rijab, police said.
In Baquba, two Iraqi police officers were killed Thursday and two other people were wounded when a roadside bomb detonated near a police convoy in front of the Diyala University Medicine School, police said.

Ein Soldat sei am frühen Freitagmorgen in der Ortschaft Tadschi nördlich von Bagdad getötet worden, als sein Fahrzeug nach einer Bombenexplosion am Straßenrand verunglückte, teilte das Militär mit. Am Vortag seien zwei Soldaten in ihrem Auto im Zentrum der Hauptstadt erschossen worden. Ein weiterer Soldat sei bei einem Granatenanschlag auf ein Militärlager in Ramadi getötet worden.
Die Gesamtzahl der seit Beginn der US-geführten Irak-Invasion im März 2003 getöteten US-Soldaten stieg damit auf 1627.
